Eight weeks later, still questions in Mickey Shunick caseLAFAYETTE -- It has been eight weeks since Mickey Shunick disappeared. As the second month of the communitywide search for the young woman drew to a close, three volunteers spent Friday night sitting outside of Counter Culture behind a makeshift table of TV trays that held Mickey paraphernalia: bright T-shirts, rubber bracelets and bookmarks. The case had grown quiet in the weeks following the identification of the college student's black and gold bicycle, found May 27 in Whiskey Bay, about 30 miles east of Lafayette. Shunick was last seen on surveillance footage at about 1:45 a.m. May 19, just two days before her 22nd birthday. The biggest break in the case came July 5, when Lafayette police took Brandon Scott Lavergne, an offshore worker from St. Landry Parish, into custody on charges of aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder in connection to the Shunick case. A week later, authorities received a tip from a farmer who noticed three freshly turned mounds of earth on his property near Lavergne's home in Swords. The possible grave sites turned up no remains or clues, leaving officials back at square one and those closest to Shunick with the same glimmer of hope they've held throughout the two-month roller coaster ride. Similarly, Mickey Shunick's mother, Nancy Rowe, finds Lavergne important only because he could be the key to finding her daughter. Reacting to arrestBrettly Wilson, whose Ryan Street home Mickey Shunick biked away from the morning of May 19, spent Friday evening raising funds for the search efforts at Counter Culture. Instead of funneling frustration toward Lavergne, Wilson has kept hope Lavergne can help to bring his friend home. "We haven't really felt a lot of the impact or antagonism or aggression specifically toward him that we've seen kind of rife throughout the community," Wilson said. "We're more just viewing this as the next step." Charlie Shunick has found herself exhausted since Lavergne's arrest, especially since it has not yet led police to her sister. Texas Equusearch returns to Acadiana to search for ShunickTexas Equusearch returned to Acadiana last week to assist local authorities with the search for Mickey Shunick. According to Tim Miller, director of the Houston-based nonprofit organization that searches for missing people, Lafayette police contacted him after arresting Brandon Scott Lavergne with charges of first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping of Shunick. Miller said the team has been searching in three Acadiana parishes – St. Landry, Acadia and Lafayette – since early Tuesday morning. “I’m tired and wore out and beat up and abused,” Miller said, laughing. “I’d like to find her today and go home.” This time around, Equusearch and police only want trained professionals involved in the search, not local volunteers, to reduce the risk of compromising important evidence. So far, however, no evidence has been retrieved, according to Miller. More:www.theadvertiser.com/article/20120716/NEWS01/120716011/Texas-Equusearch-returns-Acadiana-search-Shunick

Wish we knew if his arrest had anything to do with BSL's arrest. I still don't know what he was arrested for, and I couldn't really find that out last night.

I just hope BSL's family is being questioned, because they are the only ones that know him well enough to know what areas he would most likely favor over others, especially his brother.

I still don't know what he was arrested for, and I couldn't really find that out last night. The hold for DOC I read somewhere is usually for a parole violation. When BSL was picked up by the state police, I think it was because he tried to hide his sexual offender status. Then he was charged with kidnapping and murder in Lafayette. Maybe with AC, they've picked him up on the parole violation and they're waiting to see what he knows or if he'll cooperate before either charging him further or brokering a deal for information he might have about Mickey. TES showed up back in Lafayette last Tuesday which was the day after AC was arrested.

I still think they need to look really closely at cemeteries.

And I guess I should add, he went to church for the first time in a long time, so my thinking is that since he did that, and he knows that his higher power knows what he's done, a cemetery would be the perfect place for a burial.
