The body of a missing 37-year-old Blackfoot woman has been found in the Snake River ending more than two weeks of relentless searching by emergency responders and citizen volunteers.
Kelley Haney’s body was found in the Snake River at about 1 p.m. Monday, authorities said. The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office is not yet releasing who found the body.
An autopsy will be performed Tuesday to try to determine what caused Haney’s death, but for now the sheriff’s office says there does not appear to be any evidence of foul play.
Haney had not been heard from since the afternoon May 11 when she asked her parents to pick up her daughter from school because Haney had an appointment with a local chiropractor. But Haney never showed up at the chiropractor’s office, and by the night of May 11, her family began searching for her, eventually finding her pickup truck parked at Rose Ponds north of Blackfoot.
Haney’s keys, purse, cigarettes and cellphone were all found in her pickup, and her sandals were found near the water’s edge. Furthermore, the sheriff’s office said footprints were found leading from the sandals to the water at Rose Ponds.
The sheriff’s office along with help from several other agencies and citizen volunteers began an intense search for Haney on the morning of May 12 that continued until her body was recovered Monday afternoon in the Snake River south of Blackfoot in Bingham County. But authorities are not yet saying whether it was search crews or someone else who found the body.
The sheriff’s office expressed thanks to the dozens of emergency responders as well as citizen volunteers who continued the search for Haney for over two weeks.
After Haney’s body was recovered Monday, the sheriff’s office said that it’s believed she entered the Snake River near Rose Ponds north of Blackfoot.
The ponds and the river do not connect, so if Haney initially was swimming at Rose Ponds she would have had to get out of the water and walk a short distance to the river, which authorities believe carried her body to where it was discovered south of Blackfoot.
How exactly she died after entering the river will hopefully be determined by the autopsy.
Initially authorities focused the search for Haney on the Rose Ponds area, bringing in scuba divers, police dogs and aircraft to assist in the effort. The search area was later broadened and sheriff’s office detectives were heavily involved in trying to determine Haney’s whereabouts.
Authorities had expressed fears that had Haney gone swimming she might have succumbed to hypothermia because the water is extremely cold this time of year. She was also known to have a thyroid condition that would make her very ill without medication.
The sheriff’s office is expected to release more information on her death including a timeline of what happened following Tuesday’s autopsy.
