The body of a 21-year-old hair stylist who vanished on her way to work last Friday morning was found today in the wreckage of her car at the bottom of a steep, brush-filled embankment near Newark International Airport, law-enforcement officials said.
The search for the woman, Isabel Simoes, gained attention because of fears that she might have been a victim of a carjacking, in which thieves use force to take cars from motorists. Less than two weeks ago, an Edison woman, Gail F. Shollar, was raped and stabbed to death after a shopping trip in Piscataway. An Accident Victim
But the Acting Essex County Prosecutor, James F. Mulvihill, said today he thought it was possible that Ms. Simoes was the victim of an automobile accident. Although he refused to speculate on the cause of death, he said he found no injuries on the woman's body to suggest an assault.
An autopsy is to be performed on Wednesday by the Essex County Medical Examiner in Newark, Mr. Mulvihill said at a news conference.
Mr. Mulvihill and the First Assistant Union County Prosecutor, Michael J. LaPolla, said the car was spotted at 4:30 P.M. by Hillside police officers in a helicopter. They were retracing the route Ms. Simoes would have driven from her Hillside home to the beauty salon in Newark where she worked.
The car was found upright just off the exit ramp from Route 22 east to Route 1 south, near the airport.
Miss Simoes was found in the front passenger seat, the officials said. The car had apparently veered 20 feet down into dense brush, where it could not be seen from the road.
