A sign on the glass door of a local bakery on Monday said the business would be closed the rest of the week because of a death in the family.
According to a post on Rolling Bagel’s Facebook page, the death was that of Michael “Mikey” Fischer, 35, of Salem, who died when his truck went off Highway 22E into Detroit Lake on Saturday night.
The Facebook post described Fischer as “the smiling face that greeted you each day. Mikey always enjoyed his regular customers and enjoyed meeting new customers!”
Fischer was driving a 2005 Ford F150 west when he lost control for an unknown reason, according to Oregon State Police.
The pickup crossed the highway, where it went down a steep embankment into Detroit Lake and sank.
Lt. Gregg Hastings of OSP said several people witnessed the crash.
“There were witnesses in the area that saw it who were unable to help — the vehicle was submerged in the water,” Hastings said.
It took about an hour for Oregon State Troopers to arrive. The nearest OSP command office is in Salem. Marion County Sheriff's Office, Idanha-Detroit Rural Fire Protection District, Lyons Rural Fire Protection District and ODOT personnel were dispatched to the scene.
Two state troopers removed their duty gear and entered the water, where they found Fischer inside the cab about 15 feet under water. The troopers hooked a tow truck winch onto the pickup so it could be pulled out of the water up to the road. Fischer was confirmed dead on scene.
Hastings said there was nothing to confirm alcohol was a factor of the crash.
“It’s subject to toxicology,” he said. “Those results could take several weeks.”
Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services confirmed that they would be handling Fischer’s arrangements, although there was no information Monday on whether there would be a public memorial because Fischer’s body was still at the medical examiner’s office.
