Police: Alivia Kail may be alive in human trafficking
Woman disappeared from Mt. Washington at age 19
Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said that's one of several possible explanations for what happened to Kail, whose case remains under investigation.
"We're still looking at any financial trail, any kind of a paper trail or any sightings, but it's very possible that Alivia's alive in some other part of the country, or the world for that matter, being used in this manner," said Moffatt. "You can rest assured we have not given up on Alivia Kail, be she deceased or alive."
The theory surfaced Tuesday at Heinz Field, where the FBI was hosting a conference to raise awareness and educate the Pittsburgh area about the subject of human trafficking. County police were also involved in the event.
"They take women, get them into this sex trade and move them around the country, and that's why, in some instances, it's hard to trace them," said Moffatt.
Kail's mother, Christine Didiano, said it will be "a really great day for a lot of people" if her daughter is found alive, but she also admitted it won't be easy.
"Just trying to figure out how I get her back, and if that is the case, and I do get her back, how do I piece her back together? Because every day, when I do think of that, I just can't even imagine the torture that she would be going through," said Didiano.
Kail was 19 when she was reported missing in March 2011 by her brother, who told police that she was last seen at his West Mifflin home with her boyfriend.
Kail's brother said she told him that she was going to Florida with her boyfriend, but police said the young woman's cellphone is shut off and there is no proof that she ever made the trip.
The boyfriend, Alex Lorenzi, was arrested on an unrelated drug charge and questioned about Kail, but he was never implicated in her disappearance.
In August 2011, while then-Pittsburgh Police Officer Michael Johns was being investigated over prostitution allegations, police said they found a keychain with Kail's name inside a vehicle that Johns allegedly rented.
Johns' defense attorneys said he never met or spoke with Kail and knew nothing about a keychain. He is not charged in connection with her disappearance and police have not called him a suspect.
