The Starling
Latrobe, Pa
I cannot believe the misinformation posted here. @echoes of the past--Get your names straight. I believe the man you referred to as Joey Heatherington was in actuality Jocko Heatherington. He was gunned down in a parking lot of a business next to the Westinghouse Bridge. He was a punk and a friend of Joey's. Neither were without criminal behaviors. Joey came from a very nice Italian family. That much is correct. His parents did own an Italian store on the corner of Versailles Ave. and Union. That is correct. Little else of what I've read in these posts are. As far as the moderately upscale restaurant (Joey's) that he built after he blew up the establishment he owned on the same spot, well, he blew that one up too. Two weeks before he did so, he was heard by several employees (of which I was one), say he was going to do it. I quit that day. A lot of highly questionable people were Joey's "friends", often frequenting the bar at Joey's, among them the Monzo boys. I was exposed to so much sleaze working there that it makes me sick to think about it. It is my belief that Joey got in over his head with people way above him in the mafioso element he was in. I also kept my mouth shut about what I heard and saw but was never paid for it under the table or otherwise. Joey thought he was untouchable and that was his downfall. I feel sorry for his family but there is no question that Joey, or his remains, will ever be found.

I associated with JB and family nearly every weekend and he was always good to us. Lotsa "anything you need call me / stop over." Was at the house often. Sal and I were friends. He was a connected guy with both Pittsburgh and Phili but nothing high in the ranks. I heard at one time he was a hired gun for Phili and NJ. Disapeared? I had suggested years ago that was hit while doing a job in NJ or was in witness protection thus explaining why the whole family seems to have fanished.

Boynton Beach, FL I read every one of these posts, and it seems most authors are very young and have THE history kinda mixed up.
I indeed knew Joey et al from a distance back in the day.
Mike Neuman (sp) was a young adult on his way to the governor's mansion. He was a direct descendant of Builders Supply in the 10th Ward a very lucrative and financial successful business in the area. He was a city council man. He as public record can verify hired two Bell of PA linemen to bug the City school directors phone for political insight. Much as Watergate a few years later. The bug was improperly installed, and instead of recording the phone conversations they broadcast same to those who happened to be near the telephone pole where the device was attached. Yup, the Feds got a scent of the transgression, and nailed the 2 linemen. They flipped on Mike, and Mike did some Fed time. This destroyed his political ambitions. He upon release went into the vending business headquartered in a warehouse near the Elks before it burned down.(That's another story - The Famous Fire) Ok, so what does this have to do with the McKeesport infamous Joey Bertone? I degressed to enlighten those on the fore-mentioned Mike Neuman.
The name Joey Heatherington too was mentioned, however as was earlier corrected; his first name was Jocko. He also was misplaced in the history seen on this page.
Jocko was gunned down (22 caliber in the back of his head)at the Quality Courts parking lot on Route 30 east of the Westinghouse Bridge in North Versailles. He had just previously stopped in the lounge there on his return trip from Pittsburgh where he was on trial for distribution of cocaine. Testimony that day during the trial portrayed Jocko was a cooperating witness with the Allegheny County Police. That testimony which was unexpected, and for the record not so was not keenly absorbed by those who were involved with Jocko in his many illegal ventures. Memory reminds me the Daily News may have so have reported the alleged revelations of his cooperation. The Daily news generally hit the streets around 2 PM, daily. Thus, the story was there. Approximately, 6-7 PM is when Jocko took the hit. However, Jocko's body was not discovered for perhaps an hour or more.
Joey Bertone a well known McKeesporter and recognized easily by most people of that era. Joey showed up in the McKeesport Hospital emergency room in a fluster the same evening Jocko met his demise. Joey in his boisterous normal fashion with his wise guy dialect was asking to see his buddy Jocko who just came to the hospital as Joey said: "shot in the head". He was met by shock as no one least of all Jocko who likewise was well known had been brought to the emergency room shot.
Oops! De jav u... An hour so later after Joey's noisy inquiry, Jocko is indeed wheeled into the very same hospital emergency room with a bullet hole in his head.
Joey who was known for many things peculiar was not known for his clairvoyance. However, he was known among other attributes as a self proclaimed "hit man".
I sure can add the connection between Jocko to Joey, and why Joey would have been rattled at the possibility Jocko was providing the police with inside information.
Out of space for now.

Port-er
Mckeesport, PA I have to laugh at people how think they know but dont. Joe Bertone was a mobster that was tied into ripping people off either business(his many businesses over the years)or cocaine deals with the mob in general. Yes his parents owned Prudy's Italian store on versailles avenue right by the old argon. They had great italian hoagies and sauce, lunch meat, His parents were hard working honest italian family. His sister and mother later ran the store after his father died.
My dad grew up with him in mckeesport up by versailles and union avenue. later in life my dad bought house in haler heights which was also where Joey ended up living. I knew his family, his two daughters and son Sal. I was younger than his kids but my older siblings were their ages and hung out. They were the family on the block with the built in kidney shaped pool and high end cars and toys.
Many stories are around about how he "disappeared" but Joey was tied in with the Jordan crew from mckeesport/duquense and Porter crew from penn hills via his mafia partner Joey Rosa. Another associate not mobster but associate of Joey Bertone was Jocko Healtherington who also was rubbed out by hit man over drugs as well. There were many other characters in mckeesport at this time that were same mobster good fells kind, Joe Gray, Trigger Joe, Geno, Jocko, and more...
What is record is Joey was wacked out over ripping off other mobsters on coke deals that eventually caught up with him. He was supposedly last seen at Sonny Jordans truck garage. Sonny Jordan died two years after Joey in an trucking accident in NY. Many rumors on how that happened to. Anyway
I still remember him driving through haler heights in his white caddy baritz which they later found in new kensington after he disappeared. News paper reports of later mob trials of Joey Rosa and Geno Chiarelli said Joey was shot at Jordan Trucking and they buried him somewhere in level green PA. That is what is reported in papers.
I have memories of him as a neighbor, someone who knew my dad and my dad said stay away from him he is no good. And my sister who worked for his ice cream store in Renzie being felt up by him all the time then she quit.
My dad said Joey made his bones being a hit man then got into dope later which was his demise. Its like a old version of Mckeesport good fellas. Mckeesport has a deep history but sadly is now nothing as it was at one time.

Not sure anybody will read this, but I lived on Diehl drive in mid to late 70's. Me, Sal and Kyle were friends and I have fond memories of both of them. Sal was reckless but there was only the 2 of us on that street at the time in our age bracket, so we did everything together. Including getting into trouble. LadyBlue, I may have been to the restaurant while you worked there. Been there a few times with Sal. I was always in the Bertone house and remember it well. Joey would occasionally pick me up when he saw me walking somewhere. It got to the point where I tried to avoid him because of his lectures he would give me. Sal and I were friends and I loved him like a brother.
