Over the span of less than 24 hours, at least four police incidents led administrators to temporarily lock down several schools out of fear that potentially armed men might pose a threat to children. And that was only in the St. Louis area. Dozens of school lockdowns have occurred across the country in the wake of Friday’s mass shooting in Connecticut. Many of the incidents elsewhere played out just like the scenario that led educators in Washington, Mo., to briefly lock down schools Tuesday. In that case, schools in the Franklin County district went on heightened alert for an hour, after authorities searched nearby for a man who fled a traffic stop and was reported to have a rifle, police said. The lockdown ended about 1:20 p.m. when Derick Howard Jr., 24, of Union was found hiding in his home and was arrested. But less than an hour later, another lockdown began – this time in Belleville, after police were notified that a man was seen carrying a gun behind the Union School. The school was locked down until a teen was found with two pellet guns and a knife, which were taken by police. He was interviewed by police then released to a parent. Meanwhile, yet another incident in Washington Park prompted officials at James Avant Elementary School to put stronger restrictions on access to the school after a man was thought to be seen with a gun near the playground. www.stltoday.com/news/local/education/rash-of-school-lockdowns-triggered-by-old-protocols-and-new/article_493c50d8-b748-5201-a5c2-7113a79932c2.html
