findmickeynow.com/Michaela "Mickey" Shunick, Louisiana college student, missing after bike ridePolice in Louisiana say they are now searching for a 21-year-old college student who went missing after leaving a friend's residence early Saturday. Michaela "Mickey" Shunick was last seen riding a bicycle around 2:00 a.m. on May 19, 2012, according to a Lafayette Police Department press release. Shunick's family says they knew something was wrong Saturday morning when she didn't attend her brother's graduation ceremony, reports CBS affiliate KLFY. According to the Daily Advertiser, the FBI joined local and state police in the search on Monday, which was also Shunick's birthday. "We just want her to come home," Michaela's sister Charlie Shunick told the Daily Advertiser. "Anything -- any clue -- if anyone saw her." The 21-year-old is reportedly a senior anthropology major at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Police say Shunick is a 5'1" white female, with blonde hair and weights 115 pounds. She was last seen wearing a pastel, multi-colored striped shirt, light wash skinny jeans and grey shoes. Shunick departed the residence on a black Schwinn bicycle with gold handle bar grips and wearing a brown leather backpack purse. It is believed that she was going to her residence near the intersection of Ambassador Caffery Parkway and Congress Street in Lafayette. www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57439062-504083/michaela-mickey-shunick-louisiana-college-student-missing-after-bike-ride/

Mickey Shunick: Missing Student’s Bike Found Under BridgeTwo fishermen found the bicycle of missing Louisiana student Michaela “Mickey” Shunick on Sunday, more than a week after the 22-year-old woman went missing after leaving a friend’s home on her bike. Police found the bike early Sunday morning under a bridge at Whiskey Bay on the Atchafalaya River, after being tipped off by the fishermen. Shunick’s family members were brought to the scene and confirmed that the bike is Shunick’s black and gold Schwinn. Police are not releasing details on the bike’s condition. Police are planning to perform a grid search of the area where the bike was found on ATVs. Officers are searching the Atchafalaya River by boat, but the river’s current was too strong to allow for divers this afternoon, police said. The discovery comes two days after investigators said they found surveillance video showing Shunick on a bicycle the night she disappeared, and they are trying to track down information about a white pickup truck seen on the same video. The surveillance images appear to corroborate elements of the timeline surrounding Shunick’s last known whereabouts because it is believed they show her riding her bicycle home from a friend’s house at 1:47 and 1:48 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, as the friend had described. The images show the bicyclist believed to be Shunick, a senior anthropology major at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, on St. John Street and St. Landry Street in Lafayette, La. According to a news release from the Lafayette Police Department, “Investigators are seeking information regarding a white newer model four door pickup truck, which was captured on video after Mickey Shunick traveled on both streets.” Investigators earlier had found other surveillance video showing a glimpse of someone riding a bicycle who they believed could be Shunick, but police said that video was too blurry to tell for sure if it was her. Shunick left friend Brettly Wilson’s house on her bike last week after a night out, and hasn’t been heard from since. Before the newest surveillance video, investigators searching for any clues have found no cell phone, purse or virtually any trace of Shunick after she left Wilson’s house on her bicycle. As investigators and the woman’s family expanded the search, even sending out a recorded plea for help mentioning a $25,000 reward for information, some people in the area where she vanished have begun to wonder whether Shunick was abducted at all. “What concerns us is, where is her bicycle?” Det. Stephen Bajat of the Lafayette police department said. “If it is some kind of abduction, most people would snatch and go on and not concern themselves with the bicycle.” “The only way to solve this is if someone comes forward with a tip — and [investigators] need the public,” former FBI profiler and ABC News consultant Brad Garrett said. Hundreds of people from the community and beyond have come to aid in the search for Shunick. So many are coming to help that the volunteer headquarters had to be moved to the nearby university to accommodate them all. Now Equusearch, the well-known search and recovery group, has turned out in force. “We’re hoping for the best,” Tim Miller of Equusearch said. “We don’t sugarcoat anything. It does not look good, doesn’t look good at all, but we believe in miracles.” Wilson, the last person to see her the night she vanished, has turned to the Web with his plea for assistance in the search. He has posted a YouTube clip seeking help via social media. “This is the power of social media … To bring back somebody, and end a family’s heartbreak … You have the chance to extend the information about this young woman to everyone you know,” Wilson says in the clip. Friends and family held a candle light vigil Tuesday night, and announced a reward for tips leading to her whereabouts. Searches by K-9 units, police and volunteers have turned up no hints of what happened, but her family remains hopeful. A benefit concert occurred this weekend to increase the $25,000 reward for information on what happened to Shunick. Shunick is 5-foot-1 and 115 pounds. She was last seen wearing a pastel multi-colored striped shirt, light-wash skinny jeans and gray shoes. www.classichitsandoldies.com/v2/2012/05/28/mickey-shunick-missing-students-bike-found-under-bridge/

Private Investigator - John Abdella A private investigator hired to help find missing Louisiana college student Mickey Shunick believes that he may have information about a suspect. John Abdella, a P.I. hired by private donors trying to help solve the case, told ABC News affiliate KATC that he has received two tips from independent sources describing the same person. “And their description was almost identical,” said Abdella. Abdella noted there may be two credible suspects in the case, based on the tips he has received in the past week. “They appear to be very credible and they appear to be very knowledgeable,” Abdella told KATC. “And I thought it was more than coincidental that both of their descriptions were the same.” abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/06/mickey-shunick-disappearance-investigator-has-suspect/

Trained dogs aid searchwww.shreveporttimes.com/article/DG/20120609/NEWS01/206090313/Trained-dogs-aid-search?odyssey=nav|headFor the third day, specially-trained dogs used their paws and noses to skim the waters near the Whiskey Bay Pilot Channel Friday as part of the ongoing effort to find missing Lafayette woman Michaela "Mickey" Shunick. Special K-9s Recovery Specialists, a Texas-based nonprofit organization, trains the dogs, said Mike Candella, a Carencro resident who works with the group. "These dogs are trained for blood, mostly. They can also sometimes train them to exclude blood," Candella said. "They're taught to exclude other bodily fluids. They're also taught to take methane gas in context, because there is so much of it out here in the water." Candella said the search dogs began working Wednesday. Friday would likely be their last day, because trainers and handlers have to take special precautions to make sure the dogs do not get exhausted or overheated. Searchers concentrated in the water and woods near the Interstate 10 Whiskey Bay exit, as Shunick's bicycle was discovered there about two weeks ago. Several dogs were used in the search — two in the water and four on land, Candella said.

Friend of Missing Student Regrets Letting Her Bike AloneBrettly Wilson has shared his account of the last time he saw his friend, Mickey Shunick, repeatedly in the past six days. At about 2 a.m. Saturday, he says Shunick was at his home when she unlocked her bicycle, checked her can of Mace and told him goodbye. "I walked her out the back door. I told her to be safe. I waited until she made it out of the driveway, then I closed the door, locked it and that was the last time I ever saw her," said Wilson, the last person reportedly to have had contact with Michaela "Mickey" Shunick, 22, before she vanished. Police have gathered accounts of what happened in the hours before Shunick's disappearance from Wilson and other friends of Shunick. The friends say Shunick met up with them at Artmosphere, a local bar. At about 11 p.m. Friday, she began asking if people wanted to go to Mel's Diner because she was hungry and tired. None of her friends wanted to leave the bar, they said. Around midnight, Wilson said he offered to bike with Shunick back to his house to drop off their bicycles. Wilson said he drove her to Taco Bell, then took her back to his home where the two ate in his kitchen. The two received calls from friends asking them to go to Mel's Diner, but Shunick said she would just bike home since she was tired and had her brother's graduation Saturday, Wilson said. The missing woman's friends and family describe Wilson as a close friend to Shunick, noting that the two planned to move to New Orleans together this summer. Despite their plans to live together, Wilson and Shunick are not dating and have never dated, according to both Wilson and Shunick's friends. The two have been friends for the past four years, Wilson said www.wltx.com/news/national/article/188333/142/Friend-of-Missing-Student-Regrets-Letter-Her-Bike-Alone

So, was this just a poor statement made by Burris, or is this what they think happened? "We're comfortable with the FACT thaat she, -- they traveled from that location to the exit, exited there and dumped the bike where we found it". WE, so he thinks that Mickey was in the vehicle when the bike dump happened?GRACE: -- the roadway that goes under the bridge -- Lieutenant, what about that roadway that goes under the bridge? Is it possible that they were on that roadway? BURRIS: No. Basically, Nancy, that exit -- the only thing down there is -- there`s a launch to launch boats at a fishing area or camps. From the direction of where we last saw Mickey to that location, we`re comfortable with the fact that she probably -- they traveled from that location to the exit, exited there and dumped the bike where we found it.tinyurl.com/d93hf4h

CHARLIE SHUNICK, MICKEY`S SISTER: Well, the night before she went out, she texted me around 11:45, asking me to go to the bar with her where the bands were playing. That was in Baton Rouge. So I wasn`t going to come back that night. I`d had a few drinks, whatever. I didn`t want to drive. And (INAUDIBLE) stayed in Baton Rouge. So the next morning, I woke up around 8:00 and I called her. (INAUDIBLE) phone wasn`t on. And then I get home and my mom had called her, too, and her phone wasn`t on. Or maybe I just texted her. I don`t really know. So I texted her a few times, saying, Hey, where are you? Blah, blah, blah. She misses my brother`s graduation. And I thought it was really strange that her phone was off because I have the same phone as her, and it takes them a really, really, really long time to die. And then about 5:00 o`clock, my mom texted me and said, Hey, you know, have you heard from Mickey? And I was, like, No. So we -- my friend called her friend, Nick (ph), and he gave me Brettly`s number because he`s the last person who saw her. So I called Brettly. I`m, like, Hey, have you heard from Mickey? We haven`t heard from her, and she missed Zach`s graduation. We`re kind of mad at her. Do you think she`s at the bar and -- I mean, whatever. He`s, like, No. She said that she was going back to your house last night. He`s, like, let me just call everyone real quick and see if they saw her (INAUDIBLE) So he calls me back, says, No, no one`s heard from her. So then we all immediately freaked out. I called my mom freaking out. I went home. We called the police. They had us call the hospitals. No one had heard from her. So then we called the police again, and it`s pretty much been like this ever since. tinyurl.com/d93hf4h

As Searches Wind Down, Mickey's Mom Says They're Not Giving Up Hope - Jun 10, 2012 7:43 PM For the Shunick family, it's been an agonizing three weeks. KATC sat down with Mickey's mother, Nancy Rowe, Sunday afternoon. "It's literally hellish, we want to know, we want her back. If she's still alive, no matter what's happened, you know we can handle that. If not, we'll handle that too," said Nancy, tearing up at the thought. Sunday was the last day for volunteers at Blackham Coliseum, and 120 people headed out to search for Mickey. They won't hold another search like this again, unless new evidence surfaces. "We want to close the doors here but we want to have the other doors open, so that way there's no closure. We want Mickey to know that we are still here for her and that we're not giving up the search," said Margaret Bearb, a volunteer organizer. Bearb said Landry Properties donated vacant office space for the new volunteer headquarters. She said the new location will offer a more profession, stream lined approach to search efforts, that's still open to the public. The smaller, more organized volunteer team will continue the search for Mickey through social media, printing fliers and selling t-shirts from the new office. All donated supplies will also be kept there on stand by. "There's food and water and supplies, insect repellant, machetes, people will go out again and they'll look again, and we won't stop until we find her," said Nancy. Nancy said the overwhelming community support is what's kept her family going. She's hopeful Mickey is still alive, and they won't rest until she's found. "That's a lot of power, you know, to heal a family with one phone call or a note, they could put us all right back together again. So they need to do that," said Nancy. The new volunteer center is located in the South College Shopping Center, 2811 Johnston Street. The smaller volunteer team will start the move Monday. You're still welcome to go pick up fliers or get information there, however food and supply donations are no longer needed. www.katc.com/news/as-searches-wind-down-mickey-s-mom-says-they-re-not-giving-up-hope/
