JONESBORO, Ga. —
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said it is taking the lead in a murder investigation involving a Clayton County mother.
Investigators were called out to a Jonesboro apartment complex Wednesday night after a woman's body was found behind an apartment building.
Late Thursday afternoon, authorities identified the woman as Rochelle Alisha Thomas, 30, or Riverdale.
In a joint news conference, Riverdale Police Chief Samuel Patterson and Jonesboro Police Chief Franklin Allen announced investigators had found Thomas' car along Tara Blvd.
"At this time we are securing the vehicle so it can be process through the GBI's crime lab for any information that it might assist us with," Patterson said.
Thomas' body was discovered between two buildings of the Harmony Crossroads apartment complex Wednesday.
The complex sits on the border of Jonesboro and Riverdale.
Investigators said Thomas was last seen dropping her two elementary-age school children off at their bus stop Wednesday morning,
"And as was her habit. She would have picked them up as they returned after school at the bus stop, which she failed to do," Patterson said.
Thomas' mother then reported her missing. Just a couple of hours later her body was found.
Investigators are now trying to piece together her last hours and determine exactly where she was killed.
Most details, including exactly where her car was found, are being kept secret.
"As we speak, there are several people that we are looking at to possibly interview and if we release that information prematurely, they are going to have access to it," Allen said.
The GBI is now leading this case. Channel 2's Tony Thomas learned investigators have already searched Thomas' Riverdale home and it was said to be "relatively unsullied."
Anyone with information in this case is asked to call police at 770-909-5423.
