The body of a missing Grosse Pointe Park woman was found in a vehicle on Detroit’s east side this morning, police said.
The 56-year-old woman was discovered dead in the backseat of her car, which was found in an alley near Pinewood and Annott, police said.
She has been identified as Jane Bashara and was reported missing late Tuesday night, Grosse Pointe Park Director of Public Safety Chief David Hiller said.
He said Bashara’s husband reported her missing at 11:30 p.m. after speaking with her late Tuesday afternoon.
“It is believed she returned home after work; however, when her husband returned at around 8 p.m., she was not there,” Hiller said in a news release this afternoon. “Attempts by the family to contact her were negative.”
Bashara was found this morning.
The homicide section of the Detroit Police Department is investigating the case, Detroit police said.
The cause of death is unclear and pending an autopsy by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office, authorities said.
But, Hiller said, “there is evidence of trauma to the body.”
Contrary to some media reports, Detroit police said the woman was not discovered in the trunk of the car and the vehicle had not been set on fire.
On two occasions in December, women were found dead in car trunks, first two cousins and then two friends. In one case, the women were burned. Police have said three of the women had ties to Backpage.com, an online classifieds website that features escort ads.
Detroit police said this case does not appear to be connected.
“We have no indication at this point that that would be connected,” Detroit Police Officer Dan Donakowski said.
