Body Found In Trunk Near Middle School
A Memphis middle school turns into a crime scene after a body is found in a car parked on campus.
Shortly before 8:00 this morning, a person passing by a red car parked on the property of Cyprus Junior High School reported to a Memphis City Schools employee inside of the school that there was an odor coming from the car, a 1997 Plymouth Breeze.
A school employee opened the door of the car and tried to pop the trunk, but was unable to. They instead gained access to the trunk by pulling down the back seat of the car. They discovered the body of Thelma Louise Brooks (DOB 6-16-67) of an unknown address.
Thelma Brooks was last seen on Monday night when she told her mother that she was going to the store, and she would return by 7:00. She never came home. Her family filed a missing persons report late last night, at 10:55PM. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. She was the Building Engineer Supervisor at Hollywood Elementary School in Memphis. There are no suspects, and no one in custody at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers. This is the 55th homicide this year, and the 4th this month.

The body of a 7-year-old girl missing since Sunday was found Thursday night in a northeastern Arkansas field not far from where her shoes and pink bicycle had been recovered days earlier. The family's pastor, the Rev. Stephen Chitman, said police searching among corn and soybean fields found the body of Patricia Ann Miles, who disappeared Sunday morning after riding her bike to a grocery store. Television footage showed family members wailing after officers told them about her death. Neither the state police nor the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office would provide further details Thursday night. Patricia's pink bicycle was found early Monday in a cornfield, about 100 yards from her shoes. A family friend was arrested on a kidnapping charge and was being held on $1 million bond. Jo Ann Buchanan, who occasionally baby-sat the girl, has refused to cooperate with authorities. Investigators have not offered a motive for the kidnapping and Buchanan's relatives have insisted she is innocent. Witnesses have said they saw the girl get into a van with Buchanan Sunday morning and later saw Buchanan take the girl's bicycle from the van in a rural area north of Gilmore, in northeastern Arkansas. More than 100 police officers and volunteers combed farmland, fields and ditches in the search for Patricia. edition.cnn.com/2004/US/South/08/20/missing.girl.ap/

A Rocky Mount couple was charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 61-year-old pawn shop owner whose body was found in South Carolina. Kirk James Keller, 38, and Jessica W. Keller, 26, were jailed without bond early Wednesday and charged in the death of 61-year-old Kenneth Mac Richardson.
Richardson, who operated a pawn shop out of his Nashville home, was last seen a week ago leaving an Edgecombe County flea market in his pickup. Family members reported Richardson missing the following day.
Detectives said they believe Richardson was at the Kellers' mobile home on Friday, and that's when he was killed.
"He was either visiting them or conducting business," said Maj. Dennis Lyons of the Nash County Sheriff's Department.
The motive for the killing appeared to be robbery, said Lt. Pat Joyner of the sheriff's department. He would not say how Richardson was killed, saying the department was waiting on autopsy results.
Authorites had conducted aerial searches and sent teams of searchers on foot to look for Richardson. Investigators initially considered Richardson's medical history as a possible key to his disappearance. He had diabetes and suffered several strokes in the past.
The body was found after the Kellers gave statements to investigators, but Joyner wouldn't disclose what led officers to the couple or what they said.
Detectives began questioning the couple Tuesday night, Joyner added, and called authorities in Darlington County, S.C., where the body was found.

Forensics workers identified skeletal remains found wrapped in a tarp in Marion County as a woman reported missing from Red Bank, and police investigating the death said there was a suspect.
Law enforcement officers Monday identified the remains found Nov. 16 as Barbara C. Gill, 46, who was reported missing in October.
Gill was last seen Oct. 14 near the Cherokee Motel in Red Bank, arguing with her husband in a parking lot, Red Bank police Sgt. Jay Lamance said.
Officials said Gill was staying at the motel with her husband, Mark Gill, a construction worker from Dawson County, Ga.
Jennifer Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said the case was being treated as a homicide although the cause of death was not determined.
"Mrs. Gill was identified from dental records," Red Bank Police Chief Larry Sneed said. "We do have a suspect."
Police said Tuesday there was no arrest and the investigation was continuing.

Authorities found a woman’s skull and other bones amid discarded tires and dead leaves in the Jefferson National Forest.
They might be the remains of Stacy McCray, who disappeared two years ago, Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman said Thursday.
"A strong possibility it may be Stacy," he said. "But I am not willing to make that confirmation until I have forensic evidence."
McCray, 28, disappeared in November 2002 after leaving a friend’s apartment in Abingdon.
Police found her car 10 days later on a downtown parking lot. Six months later, her purse was found in the same area with her identification and cash still in it.
Light-colored hair and a shirt were found Thursday among the remains, the sheriff said.
Investigators removed an intact skull from the woods off Blevins Road, in the Mill Creek community near the Smyth County line.
Newman would not say what led authorities to the remains, which were found in a remote area past a locked gate.
Investigators combed a 30-yard section of woods in the cold and rain. Yellow flags marked the places where searchers found pieces of skeleton including leg bones, a pelvis, vertebrae and parts of a rib cage.
The sheriff contacted Nancy Mink, McCray’s mother.
"I felt a need to go by her residence to fill her in on the skeletal remains we had found," he said. "We have spent thousands of man-hours and have run into several dead ends (in the investigation of McCray’s disappearance). We felt early on that something unusual may have happened to her."
A woman who answered the phone at Mink’s home Thursday said she was not taking any phone calls.
Authorities will send the remains to the state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke this morning for identification. Dental records will be used to make a comparison.
"We are going to start with who we think it is, and that’s Stacy," the sheriff said. "If they do not match, then we will go elsewhere."
The sheriff said he might get an answer on the identification this afternoon.

Authorities said a 20-year-old Winchester store clerk missing since Christmas Day and believed the victim of a robbery and kidnapping was found slain Tuesday. The body of Frankie Shea Ledbetter was found in a rural area near the Elk River near the Estill Springs community, Franklin Country Sheriff Mike Foster said. "It's very hard, our worst fears were realized," said Winchester Police Chief Dennis Young. "We are going to work it both day and night until we catch the person responsible." The cause of death hasn't yet been released and no suspects or motives have been named in the ongoing investigation. Ledbetter was last seen shortly before she was to close the Whistle Stop Market at 11 p.m. Christmas Eve. She was reported missing the next morning when a customer found the store unlocked and unstaffed and called police. Ledbetter's purse, coat and cigarettes were found inside the market, which didn't have surveillance cameras. More than $1,000 dollars had been stolen and her car was in the market's parking lot. Authorities have been searching since Monday for a white sedan that the last known customer reported seeing in the market parking lot Friday night. The car was unoccupied and was described as a Chrysler or Dodge Intrepid or Stratus, authorities said. "We are looking for a white car that we have not identified yet. It was there at the closing," said William Anderson, an investigator. The Christmas Eve customer told police Ledbetter was the only person in the store. Ledbetter had only been working at the store for two weeks so that she could buy Christmas presents, her mother said. Gifts she had bought for her nieces and nephews were found inside her car. Whistle Stop Market manager Steve Heath has issued a reward for $2,000, and Crime Stoppers of Franklin County has issued a reward for $1,000. Anyone with information is asked to contact Winchester police at 931-967-3849. www.wkrn.com/Global/story.asp?S=2740195

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Knoxville police say Monday they've identified the body of a woman found last week in Fort Loudoun Lake and her murder investigation continues. The woman is 21-year-old Alicia Nelson. Her family could not confirm her identify in Knoxville Monday because her body was too badly decomposed. Investigators identified her by fingerprints and were aided by a missing persons report her family had filed in January. She has lived in Knoxville for the last three and a half years but she's originally from Charleston, West Virginia. She was staying with a friend at an apartment in East Knoxville. Nelson's family says the last time she was seen was January 13 of this year. Investigators believe she went missing and was murdered soon after that date. Police are still not releasing her cause of death but they say her body may have been in the water for up to 60 days. Alicia Nelson's mother, Jeanette Nelson, tells 6 News, "We hope that we can bring justice to her murderer because they did not have to kill her. They did not have to kill her at all and it's wrong." A dock worker found Nelson's body while he was cleaning debris out of the water at the marina near Riverside Tavern. Her body was in a black plastic bag, wrapped in duct tape, with a little bit of rope. The worker said, "There was a cinder block on one corner of it." Investigators say they're pursuing leads in the case but so far there are no arrests. Police ask anyone who saw Nelson on or around January 13 to call the crime hotline at (865)-215-7212. Callers can remain anonymous. www.wate.com/Global/story.asp?S=4656735
