The Snohomish County medical examiner's office has confirmed the identity of a woman found in the Pilchuck River earlier this month was Kelley Sarsten. Sarsten was reported missing on Aug. 19, the day before her body was discovered in the river, not far from her home in Machias. Sarsten's friends and family assumed the body was hers immediately after it was discovered and left balloons, carnations and roses in an impromptu memorial in front of Sarsten's house. Sarsten owned a dump truck and lived alone, said Beverly Seese, 75, Sarsten's next-door neighbor. "She wasn't a big person, but she was very strong-willed," Seese said. "She knew what she wanted and hit out for it." When Sarsten dropped by for a barbecue two days before she went missing, "she never said anything was wrong," said Sandi Clark of nearby Lake Stevens, who had known her for about a decade and celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas with her. "We loved her dearly. She was like a sister," Clark said. www.kirotv.com/news/3694016/detail.html

Dental records have confirmed that human remains found along Washington 410 near this Pierce County hamlet are those of a woman who vanished eight years ago.
The remains of Sandi Rae Johnson, 28, of Kirkland, were found Aug. 25 by a state Transportation Department crew checking a newly installed guardrail just north of Mount Rainier National Park.
The cause of death remained under investigation.
Johnson, a mother of two, left her home on April 26, 1996, to buy her son a birthday present at Bellevue Square Mall.
Her car was found the next day at a grocery store near SeaTac, the keys still in the ignition, and her coin purse was found later at a hardware store in Seattle's Rainier Valley. Authorities had long considered her death suspicious.
The next year King County sheriff's deputies arrested a 43-year-old mechanic who had met Johnson through her job as a sales and service coordinator at an automobile dealership, then released him for lack of evidence to bring charges. He later moved to Montana.
Pierce County sheriff's detectives said the investigation would be handled by King County.
"It appears the crime started there," Pierce County Detective Ed Troyer said.

A single mother missing for the past eight years has been found, her remains discovered along the side of a mountain road by workers who happened to glance over a guardrail.
Yesterday, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office announced that the remains found along state Route 410 Aug. 26 were those of Sandi Rae Johnson, last seen alive April 26, 1996.
The agency has yet to determine how the 28- year-old mother of two died, however, and continue to examine her remains.
Because Johnson was reported missing from Kirkland, the investigation now falls to the King County Sheriff's Office, which already has amassed a thick file on her disappearance, Sgt. John Urquhart said.
"We've always viewed it as a suspicious disappearance and suspected foul play," Urquhart said.
Johnson left her Kirkland home about 9 a.m. on a Friday, heading to Bellevue Square. The next day, her Ford Escort station wagon was found abandoned in the parking lot of a Boulevard Park Thriftway. Her coin purse was found a few days later in the parking lot of a hardware store in Rainier Valley.
About a year after her disappearance, King County sheriff's detectives arrested as a suspect a mechanic who met Johnson through her job as a sales and service coordinator at Bowen Scarff Volvo.
However, the man, now 50, was never charged with any crime in connection with Johnson's disappearance.
"We have at least a couple of persons of interest," Urquhart said yesterday.
The lead detective investigating Johnson's disappearance has moved on to other cases, Urquhart said, so a new detective will be assigned to follow up.
However, the significance of discovering Johnson's remains goes beyond the investigation, he said.
"One thing we learned from the Green River investigations is that it's very important for many families to, even if they don't know exactly what happened to their loved one, at least to know where she is," Urquhart said.

Human remains found by Department of Transportation workers last month just off Highway 410 have been identified as Sandi Rae Johnson, 28.
DOT workers found Johnson's remains in the woods while they were working in the area on Aug. 25.
Johnson, a mother of two from Kirkland, disappeared April 26, 1996. She was supposed to go to the Bellevue Square Mall to buy a birthday present for her son. Police say she never made it to the mall.
The day after she vanished, police found her car in a grocery store parking lot near in Seatac. The keys were still in the ignition, the doors were unlocked and Johnson's cell phone was inside.
Johnson's wallet was found at a hardware store in Rainier Valley and some of her credit cards were missing. Police long considered her disappearance suspicious.
In March of 1997 police arrested a man as a person of interest in connection with Johnson's disappearance. He was released three months later because prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence in the case against him.
Johnson and the man worked together at a car dealership and became good friends. Over time, Johnson's family says he became obsessed with her.
After she disappeared, the man's neighbors say he acted "strange" and he refused to help police search for his missing friend.
Johnson's family has always thought her former co-worker had something to do with her disappearance and suspected murder.
The King County Sheriff's Department will not say if the man is being considered as a suspect again now that Johnson's remains have been found.

A mother reported missing last week walked into a hospital early Monday, dazed and dehydrated but apparently uninjured, authorities said.
Police confirmed that Theresa "Teri" Smith, 40, of Selah, whose Chevrolet TrailBlazer was found Thursday in a Target store parking lot, walked into Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center about 12:45 a.m.
She appeared to be in good condition but was not able to say where she had been and the investigation was continuing, according to a police statement. A nursing supervisor at the hospital said she was in satisfactory condition.
Smith, who has a 13-year-old son, apparently had experienced a nervous breakdown or other personal difficulty and was disheveled, dirty, "dehydrated and confused," her sister-in-law, Lisa Smith, told The Associated Press.
With her at the hospital were Dan Smith, her brother and Lisa Smith's husband, as well as her husband of 17 years, Andy Smith, her father and a couple of friends, Lisa Smith said.
Police began a search and the family offered a $5,000 reward after Teri Smith failed to pick up her son from school Thursday, about six hours after a video surveillance camera showed her leaving the store, clad in a blue sweater and jeans and putting on sunglasses.
Inside her vehicle, parked slightly askew, was her cell phone, purse containing nearly $20 and a Target shopping bag with some fish food and paper towels.
At home, where she works as a medical transcriptionist, she left a note saying she was going to Target and would be back soon.
"This is so not like her because she would never leave her son," Lisa Smith said.
About 40 friends and relatives held a prayer vigil Saturday evening at a house near Selah.
Judging by information learned after she vanished, Teri Smith had been distressed for some time, her sister-in-law said.
"For a year or more, she's not been well. She's been hiding it," Lisa Smith said. She would not give further details.
"We need to get her some help and get her healed," her sister-in-law added.

It's an incredible story of survival. A Redmond teenager was found alive Sunday in the car she apparently crashed down an embankment eight days earlier. Seventeen-year-old Laura Hatch left a party late on Oct. 2, and disappeared. She'd crashed her car, but no one knew it until this past Sunday. Search teams looked for her everyday despite the fact the police department thought she was a runaway. Then, Sunday, a family friend found Laura's 1996 Toyota Camry buried in brush nearly 200 feet off the road. Police say Laura was trapped in the car without food or water. They said they did not know how she survived. How she ended up down the ravine is still unknown. Her family tells KOMO 4 News she'd been suffering some emotional problems. Police thought she'd just run away. But the family wouldn't give up, and organized their own search parties. Sunday morning, it paid off when a family friend spotted Laura's car. That friend -- a woman of deep faith -- said she had a vision Laura was still alive, and that vision brought her to the exact hillside where she found the car. Emotions poured from her family as they saw her and realized she was still alive. "The fact that she managed to survive that crash and then survive another eight days without medical attention...that in itself is a miracle," said Amy Hatch, Laura's sister. "If it wasn't for (the family friend), I know my daughter would not be here now," Laura's mother Jean Hatch added. "And if she'd gone another day or two...she probably wouldn't be alive now." Laura Hatch is now recovering at Harborview Medical Center. Her mother told KOMO 4 News that Laura has a blood clot on her brain, some broken some bones in her face, and she is dehydrated. Doctors expect she will make a complete recovery. Her family says she recognizes people, but still hasn't been able to say much. "She's so tired, so dehydrated," Amy Hatch said. Her mother added: "She has a lot of broken bones in her face. She has a blood clot on her brain right now - she's a pretty sick kid, but they say it's a miracle...they actually can't even believe she is alive." Laura spent eight days inside a car down a ravine. And while many figured she was a runaway and not a missing person, her family continued to believe in her, and in each other. "We knew it wasn't her time...it's just not her time," Jean Hatch said. Laura still doesn't know what happened to her. In fact, the woman who found her said Laura thought she'd only been in the car overnight, and was afraid she'd be grounded for crashing it. www.komotv.com/stories/33444.htm

Linn County deputies shot and killed a man early Friday who had abducted an 11-year-old autistic boy Thursday from his Mount Angel home.
The boy, Tanner Dane Kahn, was unharmed but was asleep in the backseat of the pickup where his abductor was shot.
Kahn was kidnapped Thursday morning from the 700 block of N Pershing Street, setting off an Amber Alert and a statewide search for a pickup and the boy.
After receiving a tip from a local hunter, deputies discovered the truck at 12:25 a.m. just off one of the logging roads about two miles from McDowell Creek Road, north of Sweet Home.
The man suspected of kidnapping the boy, Jeffrey Allen Eggiman, 38, was sleeping in the driver’s seat. Kahn was asleep in the backseat.
Deputies said Eggiman produced a handgun, waved it around and pointed it at them. Both deputies fired their weapons and struck Eggiman.
The deputies applied first aid and called for medical assistance, according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. Eggiman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Eggiman was the boyfriend of Kahn’s mother.
Kahn was unharmed and returned to his mother in Mount Angel.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation into the shooting, at Linn County’s request. Both deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard policy.
Cpl. Mike Harmon has eight years of law enforcement experience and has been with the Linn County Sheriff’s Office for four years. Deputy Micah Smith has worked at the office for less than one year, but has volunteered and worked in seasonal positions for the last several years.

A search for a single-engine plane ended this afternoon with the tragic discovery of three dead bodies.
The downed plane was found about 1:30 p.m. in a forested area near Highway 18 and the Lincoln County line.
Aboard the plane were two Willamina High School students and one McMinnville High School student.
The plane left McMinnville on a flight to Tillamook, according to an official with the National Transportation Safety Board.
The Piper PA-28 plane was rented by a Grand Ronde teenager on Thursday afternoon, said Jack Crabtree of the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office. The pilot and two passengers planned an elk scouting trip in the Tillamook area. They planned to return to the McMinnville airport by 7 p.m. Thursday.
The plane was required by FAA officials to stay out of the clouds, and below 18,000, but otherwise had the freedom to change course at any time.
The pilot called an automated FAA weather service to listen to the evening’s forecast before leaving McMinnville, authorities said. It is unclear how changing weather conditions might have affected the flight.
The plane was rented from Cirrus Aviation in McMinnville Thursday. A spokeswoman at the company said the missing pilot had previously rented aircraft from the company.

Family and friends do not know how Kevin P. Shaw ended up dead in his sports car after they reported that the Seattle businessman was missing.
"It's a complete mystery to us," said Larry Woodin, a longtime friend and family spokesman. "Absolutely unexpected."
The King County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed yesterday that Shaw, 44, was the man discovered Thursday wrapped in cloth and slumped over in a red Porsche sports car that was parked at Sturgus Avenue South near Interstate 90 in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood.
The cause of death was a penetrating wound to the head, the office said, and Shaw's death is considered a homicide.
Family and friends reported that Shaw had been missing since Monday.
Shaw grew up in Billings, Mont., and moved to Seattle about 20 years ago, Woodin said.
He attended Gonzaga University in Spokane and worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers as a certified public accountant.
About 10 years ago, he established his own executive recruiting service, Kevin Shaw and Associates.
Shaw supported a number of philanthropic causes, said Woodin, who described Shaw as a thoughtful, compassionate man known for his wit and biting humor.
He was "just one of the finest people on the planet," Woodin said. "I respect him almost more than anybody I know."
Seattle police spokesman Scott Moss said yesterday that the department did not have any suspects or a motive in the killing.

The Grant County sheriff's office opened a homicide investigation after finding the body of a man in a shallow grave near the home of a 79-year-old man who had been missing for several months.
Authorities said they believe the body is that of Michael B. Mallon, who was last seen on March 26. Some guns and gold coins were stolen from his home about the same time near Willow Lake, about eight miles southeast of this rural central Washington town.
John Turley, Grant County's chief criminal deputy, said the sheriff's office has two "people of interest" but refused to provide any further details.
On Wednesday, the sheriff's office received a tip from someone who suggested where Mallon's body might be found, Turley said.
Detectives found a shallow grave with the toe of a boot sticking out of the ground, next to a wood pile about 200 feet from Mallon's home, Turley said.
Investigators from the State Patrol crime lab unearthed the fully clothed body Thursday morning.
The Grant County coroner planned to transport the body to a King County forensic anthropologist Monday for autopsy and identification.
Police would not say whether the homicide was related to the Theft of guns and coins from Mallon's home.

God bless these people, both the divers and those who lost their lives here, and their families
Divers searching for human remains near submerged wreckage from a 1929 car accident in Lake Crescent found what may be the third human bone discovered there.
The bone, possibly a femur from someone's thigh, was found Saturday as a National Park Service dive team began documenting the site. They're preparing to remove the new find and two other bones, found earlier this year in more than 150 feet of water near the wreckage of a 1927 Chevrolet.
"It appears to be a human bone," Kevin Hendricks, Olympic National Park assistant chief ranger, said Saturday of the most recent find.
The three bones -- apparently part of a skull plus two femurs -- were found near the car that Russel Warren, 35, and his wife, Blanch, 33, were driving when they disappeared in 1929.
The couple were en route from Port Angeles to their Bogachiel-area logging camp when the car plunged off what is now U.S. Route 101 near Meldrim Point.
The bones' proximity to the car suggests they are remains of the Warrens, but they have not yet been tested to prove that connection.
Saturday marked the first underwater effort to document the site by a three-member team from the National Park Service's Submerged Resources Center and Olympic National Park Ranger Dan Pontbriand.
Using a remotely operated vehicle, they spent about four hours conducting systematic mapping of the area. More underwater documentation was planned yesterday, with bone recovery planned for today.
The divers can spend 20 to 30 minutes on the bottom, starting at a depth of 190 feet. The map will make them much more efficient, said Brett Seymour, project coordinator and photographer for the Submerged Resources Center. The team also includes archaeologists Dave Conlin and Jim Bradford from the center.
The first bones were spotted May 29 by recreational diver John Rawlings from Mill Creek, who was diving with a group that has been involved in efforts to find the Warren car since 2001 -- the year Olympic National Park set out to catalog the contents of Lake Crescent. Rawlings said the bones were on a slope about 150 feet down. The car is at about 170 feet, he said.
The new bone found Saturday is in about 180 feet of water, directly below the other remains, Pontbriand said.
As the bones are retrieved, Hendricks said the divers will use special containers to bring them to the surface and preserve them. They'll undergo DNA testing to determine if they are from either of the Warrens or a third party, park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said.
The Warrens' disappearance was a mystery until their car was found two years ago. They vanished July 3, 1929, en route home to their sons, Frank, 13, and Charles, 11.
Their families have been involved with the park's exploration and recovery efforts, and some were on the lake Saturday.

Remains found in a West Central Spokane backyard have led to an arrest on murder charges. Chris Hallahan, then 19, disappeared about three years ago. Thursday, his body was recovered from a shallow grave behind a home along Boone Avenue.
The man suspected of killing Hallahan, Sam Hollingsworth, is in the Spokane County Jail, charged with second-degree murder. Investigators say he admits confronting the victim about molesting children, fighting with him, stabbing him several times, and burying him in the backyard.
Investigators tell News4 this crime may have remained unsolved had it not been for a jailhouse informant who offered the information in exchange for a break from prosecution.
Hollingsworth is being held on a $1-million bond.
