BRIDAL VEIL FALLS - The search for missing Brigham Young University Student Camille Cleverley has ended as her body was located at the base of a cliff near the falls this afternoon.
Search and rescue crews discovered Cleverley's body at 3:31 p.m. in some brush and trees near a rock-strewn field at the base of a 200-foot tall cliff located about a quarter-mile east of the falls, said Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy.
Cleverley appears to have died from injuries sustained from a fall, said Tracy. Tracy said he could not yet rule out foul play pending a full investigation. Two detectives and a medical examiner were on the scene as of 4:30 p.m.
Police were able to confirm the body was Cleverley through clothing and other items found at the scene, Tracy said. Her time of death is not yet known.
"We had hoped to find her alive, said Provo City Police Chief Craig Geslison Sunday. "It's regrettable, but at least we can bring the family some closure."
An 8 p.m. candlelight gathering previously scheduled for Camille is still planned, Tracy said.
The search and rescue team that found Cleverley's body had been repelling down a cliff near the falls moving in an easterly direction, Tracy said.
"They walked right up on her," he said. "If she had been 10 feet to the right, they may not have seen her.
Volunteers had searched the area where Cleverley was found in before, Tracy said. Searchers were told today to begin re-tracing their steps, and efforts were concentrated on looking in those areas once thought least likely to produce any sign of Cleverley.
Today's search expanded further north into the rugged terrain of Provo Canyon and further east past Vivian Park, a park located above the falls.
Investigators focused the search in the Bridal Veil Falls area after two teenagers found Cleverley's bike near the falls. The teenagers took the bike, but alerted police when they learned it matched the description of the bike the 22-year-old was riding when she was last seen on Aug. 30.
