Friday, April 16, 2004 An arrest has been made in the kidnapping and murder of Tamara Dunstan. The 29-year old Augusta woman was 3 months pregnant at the time of her death. Ronald Burke, of Augusta, is being held at the Law Enforcement Center, charged with kidnapping and murder. Sheriff Ronald Strength held a press conference Sunday at 12 noon to announce that the body of Dunstan had been found and that an arrest had been made Friday. Ronald Burke was arrested on Friday. Augusta GA woman was missing pregnant: Police are now looking for a light blue or teal, late-model pick-up truck that may be a Nissan, with a missing tailgate that has been replaced by plywood, according to Richmond County dispatch radio transmissions. The person in the truck, a white male in his mid-20s, is wanted only for questioning, according to the transmission. Deputies are searching for Tamara Dunstan, 29, a pediatric nurse whom authorities said walked in on a burglary at her mother's house Thursday afternoon and was subsequently abducted. The new lookout was transmitted by Richmond County sheriff's investigators at about 9 p.m. Officials previously had a bulletin issued for a dark Ford Mustang with a USC Aiken plate on the front, but it was canceled after the new lookout bulletin was transmitted. According to Richmond County sheriff's Maj. Ken Autry, the two men in the vehicle were employed by a business doing work in the Kipling Drive neighborhood where Mrs. Dunstan was abducted. Those men, who have not been identified by police, were wanted for questioning only, police say. Anyone who spots the truck is asked to call the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at 821-1080 or your local law enforcement agency immediately. The family of Mrs. Dunstan is offering a $25,000 reward for her return and the arrest of the person or persons responsible. www.augustachronicle.com/stories/ 041604/lat_newtruck.shtml

The family of missing Augusta woman Tamara Dunstan has been in close contact with investigators, hoping to hear any good news. They're also making a personal plea to anyone with information about her disappearance. Her husband of less than a year, Bernard, says to those involved in her disappearance, "If you could just please give her a chance and let her come home. We love her so much and miss her."
Thursday afternoon, Tamara disappeared from her mother's house in Augusta off Boy Scout Road, where she had gone to drop off a birthday present. Her father David Cundey says, "We're probably thinking that she was at the wrong place at wrong time, and just interrupted a burglary." Tamara's mother, Faye Cundey, spoke with her daughter around three o'clock Thursday afternoon.
Tamara said she was shopping for shelf paper at Target. At four o'clock, Tamara didn't answer her cell phone. When her mother came home, she says Tamara's car was there, the back door was unlocked, and Tamara's keys were on the kitchen counter. She says, "I called Tamara, and she didn't answer. And I called Tamara again and she didn't answer. And I started in the foyer and said Tamara and she didn't answer and it scared me because she's 12 weeks pregnant."
She says her downstairs master bedroom and bathroom were ransacked, and that some things were missing. "I was scared, so I ran out of the house screaming for her. I ran down the steps out to the driveway and started screaming help for somebody."
Richmond County investigators, the FBI, a helicopter and cadaver dogs searched into the night and all day Friday. The family is offering a 25-thousand dollar reward. Tamara's mother pleads, "Please, whoever has my daughter, please let her go. she's an angel, she'd never hurt anybody."
Tamara's husband Bernard has a message for his missing wife. "Tamara, if you're out there to hear this, we're not giving up and we will find you and we will bring you home." Call the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at 821-1080 with any information. They say all information will be handled confidentially.

The mother of Tamara Dunstan, center, is comforted by friends and family Thursday in the Briercliff neighborhood off Boy Scout Road where authorities believe Mrs. Dunstan was abducted. Chris Thelen/Staff
Tamara Dunstan, 29, was last seen at her mother's residence at 2713 Kipling Drive off of Boy Scout Road, said sheriff's Investigator Richard Roundtree. Her vehicle was at the scene and her keys were inside the house when authorities responded, according to police.
Mrs. Dunstan's family has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to her return and the arrest of those responsible.
Maj. Ken Autry said that, based on preliminary information, police believe Mrs. Dunstan did not know her abductor.
"It doesn't appear that she was familiar with the suspects," he said, adding that "we did find evidence of foul play" at the house.
Deputies received a call to the area at about 5:15 p.m. Police believe the incident occurred sometime between 2:30 and 5 p.m.
Hours after the abduction occurred, residents living in and around the area were contacted by an emergency phone message system asking for their help in finding a dark-colored, newer model Ford Mustang with a USC Aiken plate on the front of the vehicle.
Residents also were asked to look out for a black man in his mid-20s, wearing a red T-shirt, and a white man in his mid-20s, both of whom were occupants of the vehicle.
"Basically, what that is doing is enhancing our canvass," Maj. Autry said. He stressed that the men are wanted only for questioning. He said a neighbor in the Kipling Drive area noticed the vehicle and the men during the time of the incident.
"It's not that we have definitely connected (the vehicle) to this incident," Maj. Autry said.
A Georgia State Patrol helicopter also was called in to help search the wooded area around the Kipling Drive house and was flying over late Thursday night.
Andrea Timmerman said Mrs. Dunstan had told her mother Sunday that she is pregnant. She said she was surprised at her cousin's disappearance and that she didn't know why something like this happened. "She's the sweetest person you'd ever know," Mrs. Timmerman said. Mrs. Dunstan is described as white, 5-feet-4-inches tall, weighing 120 pounds.
She has shoulder-length brown hair. Mrs. Dunstan is a nurse at University Hospital, Mrs. Timmerman said. She had previously worked at Medical College of Georgia Children's Medical Center in Augusta as a nurse, according to an engagement announcement in the Feb. 5, 2003, edition of The Augusta Chronicle. The announcement also said that Mrs. Dunstan graduated from Clemson University.
She received her license as a registered nurse license in 1998, according to the Georgia Secretary of State's Web site. Mrs. Dunstan is married to Bernard Samuel Dunstan III of Augusta. Maj. Autry said late Thursday that Mr. Dunstan had been contacted about the abduction and at this point is not suspected to be involved in his wife's abduction. "There's no indication at all that that might be the case," Maj. Autry said. As traffic was rerouted by Richmond County Sheriff's Deputies at the entrance of the Briercliff subdivision, neighbors, family member and friends looked on, some crying and embracing.
Neighbors said that although their neighborhood is nice, there have been recent burglaries there. Tom Staton, who lives on Kipling Drive, was among the crowd and said he knew of two burglaries in the area in the past two months. He said he recently had a security system installed at his house, but "I've never had any problems."
Maj. Autry said his department is researching past burglaries in the area. Aiken County sheriff's bloodhounds were called in by Richmond County to help in Thursday's search for Ms. Dunstan. Police also went door-to-door, canvassing the neighborhood.
Anyone with information about Ms. Dunstan is asked to call the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at 821-1080.

A community's worst fears are confirmed tonight in the case of Dena Carter. Unidentified remains found last week in west Georgia are in fact hers. Police and friends involved in the search had hoped against hope this wasn't her and Carter was still alive. Now, two days before she was due to deliver a child, she's been found.
Forensic experts at the GBI crime lab in Atlanta confirmed late this afternoon that the remains found last week at Fort Benning do belong to Dena Carter. The 23-year-old disappeared September 11 when she left home to walk to the Georgia Southern library.
Suspicion arose immediately when investigators found also what they thought were bones of a unborn child.
Since the discovery last week, the days have been agonizing for those who took Carter into their congregation and into their hearts. WTOC has been following the story since Carter disappeared and was with some of those friends today. They'd been waiting to celebrate with her the birth of her child. They've spent the last six days not sure if they wanted hope or closure.
In the midst of turmoil, friend Diane Budgett sought comfort in her church. Everyone at Agape Worship Center wanted answers when, last week, hunters at Fort Benning discovered remains of a woman and unborn child. Tests have confirmed the remains were hers and a church's joy went from faded to shattered.
"We had planned a baby shower," said Budgett. "I was supposed to go be with her when she had the baby. We were excited about it."
She'd already bought a nursery full of things for the baby. Carter's adopted family in Statesboro had planned all year to spend this week waiting for a call. December 25, Christmas Day, is the date doctors gave Carter to deliver the daughter she'd already named Destiny.
Budgett says they've moved chairs in the sanctuary so Carter's seat doesn't seem like Carter's seat. Beyond that, its hard for anyone to see anything but Carter, no matter where they look.
As saddened as they are now, folks at Agape Worship Center said the thing they want most now is closure. As Budgett said today, it was hard to hold on to something that didn't seem to be there anymore.
Authorities called her mother this afternoon with the news. The people at Agape had tried to prepare her for this kind of news, but that only goes so far. No word on when or if she'll be back to Statesboro.

A Midway family is grieving tonight after a horrible discovery this afternoon. The body of two-year-old Taylor Michelle Berry was found this afternoon in a lake near her Liberty County home. She had been missing since Saturday.
This weekend was supposed to be perfect for Taylor's mother, Laura. She was going to see her daughter for the first time in five months. Instead, it became a nightmare.
"I didn't get to see her before she was gone," a tearful Laura said. "When I came into town, she was missing for over four hours. Saturday afternoon, Taylor wandered from her grandparents' home. Hundreds of volunteers teamed with authorities searching the woods and water for Taylor.
Mike and Julie Porterfield helped raised Taylor as parental guardians and organized a search party Monday morning, using an underwater donated by Bass Pro Shops. Their search ended when Taylor's body was found in the water near Isle of Wight.
"People don't understand," said Mike. "They can say blood's thicker than water, but you don't understand."
Laura looked forward to celebrating Taylor's third birthday by her side December 28. Fate had other plans.
Taylor's family is hoping her death was accidental. An investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy will be completed within the next two days. In the meantime, the Liberty County Sheriff's Department and Taylor's family want to thank everybody who came together to help with the search.

A 78-year-old Carroll County woman and her two grandchildren turned up safe Saturday night in western Alabama, more than 24 hours after they went missing.
The circumstances of their disappearance remained unclear.
Evelyn Berdette was last seen Friday evening when she picked up Amanda Wilbanks, 10, and Leah Hamel, 20 months, from a babysitter.
When she failed to return to her home in Temple, her family started searching and called in the authorities.
They got a call from Thomaston, Alabama, where the grandmother's car ran out of gas.
"They were at a convenience store and my cousin Amanda somehow called 911," said Holly Johnson, one of Berdette's grandchildren. "Some of our family members are on the way down there to pick them up right now."
Johnson said the family search extended from Atlanta to Alabama.

The remains of a Barrow County man, missing since March, have been found. The GBI says hunters found the skeletal remains of Robert Dwayne Green in woods near Winder Wednesday night . The location is about a mile from Green's mother's home, the last place he was seen alive.
Green's brother Lee told Channel 2 News he got the bad news in a phone call from the GBI. Green says his brother had been involved with drugs.
His grandmother says they had been praying since he disappeared that he would be found alive and well. Green is survived by his wife and children.
The family believes Green was murdered for the $3,000 in cash that he had in his pocket. The cause of death has not been released, pending an autopsy.
Family members say they believe there will be a break in the case soon and an arrest will be made.

The body found Tuesday night in a car has been identified as that of a Roswell nurse who's been missing for more than a week, police said Wednesday. Fulton police Cpl. Gary Syblis told reporters that Leslie M. Beebe, 26, was found in her 2000 silver Volkswagen Jetta that was parked along Forestwood Lane in Roswell. Police said they plan to conduct an autopsy to determine an exact cause of death. Beebe was last seen around 1 a.m. on Dec. 14 as she left The Derby sports bar in Alpharetta. Her car also disappeared. After the woman disappeared, her family began offering a $10,000 reward for information that helped locate her. Roswell police Sgt. Frances Watson says Beebe's family grew concerned because she had not called or reported to work for her job at a private nursing company. www.wsbtv.com/news/4016861/detail.html

An Alzheimer's patient whose disappearance prompted creation of an alert system for the elderly has been found dead eight months after she wandered away from her Northwest Atlanta home.
The skeletal remains of Mattie Moore, 67, were discovered Thursday when a dog brought a bone to the home of a neighbor, who called 911.
The body was in a wooded area 500 yards from Moore's home on Ada Avenue.
Police notified the family Friday morning after the body was identified through dental records.
"It's really hard," Moore's son, Kenneth Moore, said. "But eight months have passed, and we've all prepared ourselves for the worst."
Moore said he remains convinced his mother was killed and dumped in the woods where the body was found.
The medical examiner said there were no signs of foul play.
Mrs. Moore's disappearance on April 21 sparked months of intense searching by thousands of volunteers.
A $5,000 reward was offered.
The Atlanta City Council created "Mattie's Call," a system to alert the public if an Alzheimer's patient wandered away. It was modeled after "Levi's Call," the alert system for child disappearances.
Mrs. Moore's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Ephraim Baptist Church on West Marietta Street in Northwest Atlanta.
"It's good and it's bad," Kenneth Moore said. "For me the hardest thing was not knowing if she was alive or dead or where she was."
Moore's home had no Christmas decorations Friday, just a yellow ribbon placed on the door previously in hopes Mrs. Moore would return safely.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed last week that the body found on the Traditions of Braselton golf course was Kayla Marie Wills, a missing woman from Winterville.
Human remains were found on the 13th fareway of the Jackson County golf course on March 7. The GBI confirmed last Wednesday that dental records helped identify the body of Wills.
The 19-year-old woman, who graduated from Madison County High School in 2001, was last seen in July 2002.
Her live-in boyfriend at the time, 47-year-old Robert Eugene Hill of Pendergrass, has been charged by the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Department with concealing a death and abandoning a body.
GBI spokesperson Vicki Metz Vickery said in an e-mail Tuesday that no other charges have been filed and no further information is being released on the results of an autopsy, pending test results.
“The GBI and the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Department continue to investigate Kayla’s death,” according to a GBI press release.
Hill — who pointed investigators to the Traditions site for Wills’ body — told authorities that he awoke one morning and found her dead. He then buried Wills’ body at the golf course, where he was operating heavy equipment during the construction of the development, according to The Associated Press.
The GBI and Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Department thanked a number of law enforcement officers, volunteers and local contractors for the help with the week-long search for Wills’ body.

48-year-old from Danielsville had just been reported missing.
The body of a missing Danielsville woman was discovered in the trunk of her abandoned car in Banks County on Friday, Oct. 28.
Jayne Marie Correll, 48, of a Dalton Drive address in Madison County, was found dead in the trunk of her 2000 Chevrolet Impala.
The vehicle, which was reported as abandoned on Wilson Bridge Road at the intersection of Hwy. 63 to the Banks County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 21, was about to be towed when the body was discovered.
Banks County Sheriff Charles Chapman said a deputy responded to the call about the abandoned vehicle, which had a Jackson County tag, during the morning of Oct. 21, a week before the body was discovered. The vehicle had not been reported stolen.
Various Banks County officers continued to check on the status of the vehicle, which was tagged for being abandoned, during the next several days. Chapman said the vehicle was well off the roadway and did not pose a danger to drivers.
On Oct. 28, the car was being prepared to be towed when a deputy noticed an odor from the trunk. The body was then discovered at this time.
The area was immediately made a crime scene and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist with the case.
The body was sent to the state crime lab in Atlanta, but an autopsy did not immediately reveal the cause of death. Chapman said he is currently awaiting additional toxicology reports on the body. The sheriff said the body did not have any obvious causes of death such as gunshot or stab wounds.
Last weekend, officials with the GBI and the Banks County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation to try and determine who had last seen Correll alive.
“We have been backtracking to see where she was in her final days and who might have seen her,” the sheriff said. “We have been to the last known places she was known to be and we are interviewing people who last talked to her.”
Chapman said the investigation has covered three counties. The car did belong to the victim. Chapman said Correll had recently purchased the car but had not transferred the tag yet.
The body was discovered face down in the trunk. “Right now we have a lot of questions and a lot of investigating to do,” Chapman said.
The car was impounded in a secure lot at the BCSO. The sheriff said the car has been examined thoroughly for evidence.
“Several people have been questioned,” Chapman said. “Others are in the process of being questioned about this case.”
Correll was reported missing Oct. 28, the day her body was discovered in the trunk of her car.
Chapman asked if anyone has any information on this case to contact the BCSO at (706) 677-2248.

[glow=red,2,300]Son Of Former Georgia Senator Missing From Waycross[/glow] The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting Waycross police in its search for 27-year-old Donnie "Van" Streat Jr. of Nicholls, Ga. Streat's father is former Georgia state Sen. Van Streat. Streat disappeared after leaving his job at the CSX Center in Waycross about 10:15 p.m. last Wednesday. He was reportedly headed to visit a friend in Alma. Waycross police said Streat's pickup truck was found partially submerged in a pond in Bacon County about 5 p.m. Friday. They said there was no sign of struggle in the truck and they are currently searching his cell phone records for any information that could help with the investigation. The Bacon County community has come together to aid the police in their search. The community said it will continue to search old roads and ponds to find any clues possible. "We're all heartbroken, but we're hoping for the best. All you can do is just hope and pray. Everybody just pray for the best," said Streat's brother-in-law, Robert Hooper. Members of the GBI, the Waycross police chief and others met Tuesday afternoon to look over clues to come up with some idea of what happened. "We are actively perusing all the investigative leads that are coming in," said GBI agent Jeff Evans. Streat's family members and friends said they will not give up. They continue to expand their search area. Waycross police chief Tony Tanner said the investigation may end up involving several counties. "Anywhere in south Georgia -- if they've seen him, we need to know about it," Tanner said. Streat was last seen wearing his CSX uniform. [glow=red,2,300]Remains of Missing Woman Identified [/glow] Woodstock Police announced Friday that the remains of a body found earlier this week are that of a woman missing since last year.
Investigators identify the dead woman as 80-year-old Louise Poe.
Ms. Poe, who suffered from dementia and asthma, had been missing since December 28, when she walked away from the Woodstock Estates Assisted Living Center.
The center is about a quarter of a mile from the place where her body was found.
Police, using search dogs and helicopters, looked for Ms. Poe the night of her disappearance and the following day.
The search did not begin until an hour after her disappearance, due to the center staff's decision to search on their own before calling police, according to Woodstock Police Public Information Officer Dan King.
In January, Woodstock Police charged 41-year-old Rose Jean of Mabelton on a misdemeanor charge of reckless conduct.
She is accused of not responding to the alarm set off when Poe climbed out of her window at Woodstock Estates off Highway 92 the night of December 28.
