Off to the side of the road and just two and a half miles from his home, six-year-old Christopher Barrios Jr. was found. Yellow evidence flags mark the spot where the discovery was made.
"I've worked children cases before but never have any of them made me sicker than this," says Cpl. Jesse Cook with DNR.
Cpl. Cook says he and his partner were driving down the north end of Canal Road when they spotted tire tracks on the side of the road.
"We actually got out and went to the side of the road and we saw the black bag. We noticed all the bugs flying around it and then knew that was going to be him," says Cook.
It was the same area volunteers and police searched before. Investigators say the body was never spotted because it was covered.
Three members of the Edenfield family and Donald Dale remain behind bars. Chief Matt Doering says it's now about building a strong case to take to court.
"We maintain a perimeter, we will collaborate all the statements and stories we have and build a case for the prosecution," says Chief Doering.
Police aren't releasing any details on Christopher's cause of death or how long the body was in that location.
Everyone involved in the search has been affected one way or another. They say they welcome the closure although it's disturbing to handle.
"Knowing he's dead is some sort of closure. That's the best way I can sum it up," says Doering.
New charges are pending against the Edenfields and Donald Dale. Chief Doering says all four of them will be charged with murder.
