Police Identify Body Found in Car as Missing Wisconsin Student Sunday, July 29, 2007
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Authorities positively identified the body of a woman found in a car at the bottom of the Fox River as that of a Green Bay student missing since July 13, according to the Brown County medical examiner.
An autopsy positively identified 21-year-old Mahalia Xiong, Capt. Karl Fleury said at a news conference.
"There is no sign of foul play," Fleury said. "She was still dressed in the clothing she was wearing the night she went missing. Inside the vehicle, we found her purse."
Xiong's cause of death was still under investigation and officials were awaiting the results of toxicology tests to determine her blood-alcohol level, said. She had been drinking the night she vanished, investigators have said.
She was last seen by friends July 13 leaving the parking lot of the Ashwaubenon bowling alley after a night of drinking.
A Green Bay police officer spotted tire tracks yesterday leading into the water on the Fox River's west bank. That prompted a search of the river and Xiong's rental car was found submerged.
According to Fleury, it was believed Xiong was heading to her sister's home on the east side of the Fox River on the night she disappeared is likely the night she went into the water. Foul play is not suspected in her death.
Investigators hope to recover from the car's computers information that can shed more light on the timing of the plunge into the river and how fast the car might have been traveling, he said.
"It was found 95 feet away from the shore. That tells us potentially there is some speed involved," Fleury said.
Police have been keeping close contact with the Xiong family, according to Commander of Investigations Thomas Molitor.
"The family is very upset. But at some level this is closure for them," he said.

Overview Student -- And Her Car -- Go Missing
Green Bay Police are investigating the sudden disappearance of college senior Mahalia Xiong. They say the 21-year-old University of Wisconsin - Green Bay student simply vanished after a night of socializing with friends at a nearby bowling alley and sports bar.
Mahalia's friends tell police that they dropped her off at the Aushwaubenon Bowling Alley parking lot to retrieve her car after a night of hanging out at both the bowling alley and a nearby sports bar. They say she was last seen in her 1996 white Mercury Sable at around 2 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2007.
Cops believe Mahalia did not follow her friends on to the highway and instead chose a different route to her east-side Green Bay home.
Police say that because it is summertime, that area is overgrown with a canopy of leaves and there are a lot of valleys and curves where a car could have easily gone off the road. They have been conducting road-side searches and sent up helicopters to search by air.
Still, no one has seen Mahalia or her car.

No Reason For Disappearance
Green Bay investigators say that they know no reason for Mahalia's vanishing. They do not believe she met with any foul play.
Friends and family say Mahalia is happy with her life which is very full. Mahalia has a boyfriend, close friends and is a successful student leader at UWGB. Cops are encouraging everyone to be on the look-out for the 1996 Sable and ask if anyone has seen Mahalia since that early Friday morning to let them know.
Missing Girl's Car Pulled From River
The Green Bay Police Department announced on July 26, 2007 that a car they pulled from the Fox River in downtown Green Bay has been positively identified as the vehicle that Mahalia was driving when she disappeared.
Green Bay Patrol Officer Rick Belanger became suspicious after he saw a set of tire tracks leading up to the river's edge. A dive team was quickly called in and was able to identify that there was a vehicle upside down about 25 feet beneath the water's surface. A crane was used in order to pull the car out of the water.
Police say the car is definitely the one that Mahalia was driving on July 13 when she disappeared and that there was a female body inside the car. However, they have not yet been able to determine if the body is Mahalia's.
The manner and cause of death is expected to be determined within the next few days. Stay tuned to amw.com for all the latest developments.
