Eleven days after Jaclyn Funderburg, 22, went missing while running errands, her body was discovered in an open field in Colorado Springs. An unidentified friend of the victim claimed to have seen Jaclyn and her boyfriend involved in a "verbal and physical argument" in the parking lot of a local Walgreen's Pharmacy, the Associated Press reported. It was the last time she would ever see Jaclyn alive.
The El Paso County Search and Rescue Team located Jaclyn's remains with the help of scent hounds at around noon on Sunday, July 22, 2007, while searching the area around Space Village Avenue and Marksheffel Road on the Banning-Lewis Ranch property, Manny Gonzales reported for the Denver Post. Jaclyn's body had been buried in a shallow grave, allegedly leaving her body partially exposed. The county coroner assisted in the exhumation of her remains, which were later transported to the El Paso County Coroner's office. Her death was ruled a homicide due to the "multiple injuries" she sustained prior to death.
Interestingly, a media spokesperson for the Colorado Springs Police Department claimed that the area where Jaclyn's body was discovered was in close proximity to where an acquaintance of Salvator Esquivel-Castillo lived. There are circulating rumors that the acquaintance is Salvator's ex-wife, whose identity remains unknown. However, those rumors remain unsubstantiated. It is unclear if more than one person was involved in Jaclyn's disappearance, murder or the disposal of her body.
