A Sandusky police lieutenant was arrested for persistent disorderly conduct and trespassing after a disruption near a Put-in-Bay bar.
Melvin Burns Jr., 45, appeared to be intoxicated and was argumentative with Put-in-Bay police officers when he was arrested at about 9:16 p.m. June 30, according to Put-in-Bay police reports.
According to the report, Manuel Seidelman, 27, who was described as Burns' son, was trying to get into the Beer Barrel Saloon without a valid ID. When Seidelman was denied access, Burns flashed his police badge and began arguing with Beer Barrel security, the report said. Seidelman then threatened to kill a Beer Barrel security officer after the officer again refused to allow him to enter the bar, the report said.
Police said they instructed Burns and several others to leave the property. According to the report, Burns told officers, "Do you know who I am? You can't take me. Let me see you take me."
Burns was arrested after he repeatedly pushed a police officer who told him to stop, the report said, adding that Burns said, "What are you gonna do about it? I am a lieutenant. You're a nobody sergeant."
Put-in-Bay Police Chief R. Lampela informed the Sandusky Police Department about the incident.
Sandusky Police Chief Kim Nuesse said that she could not discuss the incident since she has yet to speak with Burns.
"We're looking into the situation and investigating it internally," Nuesse said.
Burns does not have a history of criminal conduct, according to Lt. Chris Hofacker.
Tim Niese, former Sandusky Police officer and part owner of the Beer Barrel Saloon, told police that he used to be Burns' training officer and said that his behavior is "typical."
Seidelman was arrested for criminal trespassing, resisting arrest and persistent disorderly conduct. Seidelman also has an outstanding arrest warrant from Franklin County. The issuing agency decided not to extradite him, the police report said.
Burns and Seidelman were later released.
