A probationary police officer was arrested Tuesday and charged with assaulting his girlfriend.
At 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, emergency dispatchers received a call from a woman who said her boyfriend assaulted her at their home in the 1500 block of Jameson Drive, near Indian Lakes Boulevard. Upon arriving at the scene, police officers learned that the suspect was Joseph Frank Barcia, a Virginia Beach probationary police officer. He was taken into custody and charged with domestic assault.
A magistrate placed him on a 72-hour protective order and released him on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond.
Police said Barcia violated that order by returning to his home to retrieve his property.
When police learned of this, Barcia was arrested again and accused of violating the protective order. He was taken to a magistrate and released on a magistrate summons.
Barcia was hired as a certified officer in September and assigned to the 1st Precinct. He has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. He surrendered his badge and firearm.
