A former executive director for the United Way of Gloucester County now living in Illinois has been reported missing and authorities are calling her disappearance "suspicious."
Police searched the Columbia Avenue home of 50-year-old Nancy A. Martin Thursday morning after finding her rental car unattended in Washington Township on Tuesday. Her son Benjamin, 30, who had been living in the home, reported her missing on Sunday.
Employed as a fund-raiser for the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where she lives, Martin had been in town on business.
Authorities released few details as to any specific items they may have recovered from the scene, and would not say if they had any indication of the missing woman's whereabouts.
"All we know right now is she was reported missing and she is considered missing," said Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld. He would not comment on whether any physical evidence linking foul play had been retrieved.
The Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit is trying to find anyone who might have seen the gray, four-door Chrysler 300 rental car on the road. The car was found in a parking lot near a Firestone Tire & Service store on the Black Horse Pike.
Several unmarked police vehicles pulled up to the white rancher with black shutters, located on the corner of south Woodbury-Glassboro Road, around 8 a.m. Crime scene tape was put up by mid-morning.
Nearly 10 detectives, wearing protective gear to avoid tampering any evidence, investigated inside the house and unattached garage. They carried two paper bags into a gray van, as well as a cooler and bag into the cars. The contents were not disclosed.
"It's a beautiful neighborhood, and it's very upsetting to think this could happen," said next-door neighbor Elissa Eystad, a mother of three children ages 13, 9 and 4 and a business owner in the borough. "Thank God we weren't here because it would really scare the kids."
Martin has worked at the university since September as the Associate Director for Institutional Advancement for the College of Science.
Investigators in New Jersey have stepped up their search for a woman who has been missing for a week.
Nancy Martin was last seen on March 10th. She was visiting one of her son before heading back home to Illinois when she disappeared.
Friday night the Gloucester County prosecutor's office say Nancy Martin's disappearance is suspicious and likely foul play was in involved.
Authorities tell Action News they are pursuing strong leads in the case.
Friday the police crime scene tape is down, blocking off her home in Pitman, New Jersey, which is where she was last scene March 10th, the same day she arrived from Illinois.
This is a quiet block and the neighbors are stunned by the investigation.
"I hope they find her, but I don't know what to think about it, I didn't expect it to happen three houses down."
Since moving from Illinois, Martin's 30-year-old son has been living here. He reported her missing on Sunday, the same day she was supposed to be returning home. Friday, no one answered the door at the home.
Neighbors say Ben martin keeps to himself.
Police searched the home after finding her car March 21 in a park parking lot near a tire store on Black Horse Pike. Investigators won't say what, if any, clues they found in the home.
Nancy martin has three sons and is a grandmother. If you know anything, call the Gloucester County's prosecutor office.
