Marco Polo: The App Naomi Jones Used Before She Was MurderedPENSACOLA, FL (WKRG) — The Escambia County Sheriff has revealed an app that might have contributed to the disappearance and death of 12-year-old Naomi Jones. At a press conference on Wednesday, Sheriff Morgan said the app “Marco Polo” was used by Jones to communicate with individuals that might be connected to her death by asphyxiation. The exchanges on Jones’ accounts were said to be sexual in nature. Morgan cautioned all parents to be wary of apps like Marco Polo, which teens can use to communicate with strangers. Marco Polo is described as a “video walkie-talkie app” that’s similar to Snapchat. Robert Letroy Howard, 38, is being held on a $600,000 bond. He was booked into jail around 4:30 a.m. Thursday. Howard is a registered sex offender in East Brewton, Alabama. Public records show he was convicted of raping two 19 year old women in 1999. Authorities last verified Howard’s address on June 1, according to the Alabama sex offender registry which lists him as compliant. Robert Letroy Howard, 38, is being held in the Escambia County Jail in Pensacola. He is charged with first degree murder, kidnapping and failure to register as a sex offender. Authorities say Howard was living with his girlfriend in the same apartment complex in which Jones lived in the 1400 block of East Johnson Avenue. He lived in a nearly adjacent apartment to Jones. She was last seen May 31 in that apartment complex. Jones likely died within 24 to 36 hours after her May 31 disappearance, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said. He body was then later dumped into Eight Mile Creek, some 4-5 miles away, where it was found days later by two men looking for a fishing location. Morgan said investigators believe Howard acted alone. Howard was convicted in 1999 on two counts of first degree rape to two adult females in Escambia County, AL. I've located a brutal murder in Louisiana in 2013 that the FBI was investigating but her COD was beating. We don't know exactly what all was done to Naomi but we know that her COD was asphyxiation/strangled. What we don't know is if she was beaten. This woman's boyfriend identified as Clinton Allen was a sex offender records can be found charged against him. He has never been arrested for her murder.

Naomi Jones remembered as a happy, caring childPENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) — Dancing, smiling and full of life. That's how Naomi Jones' former principal will remember the child whose life was taken too soon. Channel 3's David Gonzalez spoke with Naomi's former principal of Ferry Pass Elementary School, Rhonda Shuford. She said the school is mourning the shocking loss of its former student. Shuford said one of the last memories she has of Naomi is at the 5th grade banquet. She remembers the vibrant 12-year-old dancing, smiling and just being really happy. Naomi was a rising 6th grader and was looking forward to attending Ferry Pass Middle School, where she aspired to join the cheer squad, Shuford recalled. Shuford said Naomi was a good student and a caring person. The big sister also had younger siblings that attended the elementary school. Naomi's mother, Shantara Hurry, allowed Channel 3 News to share a video of Naomi showing off slime she made. In the video she sings songs and dances a bit. Underneath the video, which was posted on June 4, someone wrote, "This breaks my heart." Fishermen found her body in 8 Mile Creek Monday, five days after her mother reported her missing. Thursday, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan announced the arrest of a convicted sex offender, Robert Howard, for her murder. His girlfriend lives in an apartment complex near where Naomi and her family reside, Sheriff Morgan said. Murder suspect has prior rape conviction involving a "child under 18"ENSACOLA, FL (WALA) - Robert Howard is behind bars in Pensacola, but, the 38 year old spent most of his adult life locked up in an Alabama prison for two separate rape convictions. Court documents obtained by FOX10 News show Howard was arrested on December 8, 1998 for 1st degree rape in Brewton. An Escambia County, Alabama judge granted a request from the District Attorney to seal the record the next month, because the victim in the case was a "child under the age of 18." Howard was locked up on $85,000. In three hand written letters Howard asked the judge to reduce his bond. All the requests were denied. A request for Youthful Offender Status was also denied. Howard pleaded guilty to first degree rape in September of 1999, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Alabama Corrections officials tell FOX10 News Howard applied for probation in 2010, and was denied. He ended up serving the full 15 years, and was released December 2, 2013.
