HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Texas Equusearch volunteers are looking for missing University of Houston student An Vinh Nguyen in the woods in northwest Harris County. Volunteers say the sheriff's office gave them specific instructions to focus in on a three to five mile square foot area near FM 1960 and the Hardy Toll Road. Investigators wouldn't say why crews should look there. Nineteen days ago, Nguyen disappeared. For nearly three weeks, detectives have been secretive about the case. But today, ABC 13 has new information. We've learned Nguyen's beloved orange Jeep Renegade, which we tracked down at the sheriff's impound lot Friday, was not found on the U of H campus. Investigators wouldn't say where they picked it up. But we're told it was empty and the keys are missing. Detectives don't have Nguyen's cell phone either. A spokesperson with the sheriff's office says investigators are also waiting on important evidence: test results from their lab that could reveal more. What kind of tests? Again, authorities won't elaborate. The area Equusearch is searching is not far from Nguyen's family's Willowbrook area home. abc13.com/news/search-intensifies-for-missing-uh-student/1890984/

KTRK reported earlier this month that Nguyen's cell phone records, which the network obtained from the missing man's family, documented that his most recent text message was a communication with a number listed in New York; KTRK also reported that a man who answered the number in New York would not provide his identity, and said that he had never met Nguyen in person. He is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds. patch.com/texas/midtownhouston/missing-uh-students-jeep-found

An Vinh Nguyen, 27, a University of Houston student was last seen in northwest Harris County, Texas on March 31st 2017, leaving a friend’s at the Golden Bamboo II Apartments at 8125 Mills Road in the Willowbrook area in his 2016 Jeep Renegade. Nguyen did not show up for work on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Ella Eye’s in Tomball, Texas. “He came to my apartment on Friday night to work on something for school. He made us fish tacos. He left my home about 10:30 to work on that paper,” Bobby Johnson, An Vinh’s friend told ABC News 13. “I have a lot of anxiety about this whole situation. An Vinh is not somebody I work with. He is somebody I care about.” An Vinh had booked a flight to Fort Lauderdale for an interview for a flight attendant job with Spirit Airlines.
