HAMILTON COUNTY – An autopsy has confirmed that the body found inside an SUV submerged in Geist Reservoir is that of missing Hamilton County teenager Peyton Reikhof. The cause of death was ruled as drowning.
Police found the SUV Sunday evening and confirmed that the vehicle belonged to Riekhof, who disappeared early Thursday morning. Police canceled the statewide Silver Alert for the missing teen. A neighbor alerted police after she found tire tracks on her property heading toward the reservoir.
Divers searched Sunday evening and found Riekhof’s 2006 Mercury Mariner in the water. They also found a body, though they couldn’t say for sure that the teenager was inside until Tuesday morning.
Riekhof, a graduate of Hamilton Southeastern High School, was reported missing early Thursday after a friend called authorities to say she stormed away. The friend told investigators that she appeared agitated. A surveillance photo shows she stopped by a gas station at 96th and Olio around 2 a.m.
Volunteers searched the area and put up fliers in hopes of finding Riekhof. Friends held a vigil Monday night to show their support for the teen and her family.
Hamilton Southeastern Schools will provide grief counselors and clergy members for friends, classmates and staff members. The counselors will be available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hamilton Southeastern High School through the end of the week.
