Authorities on Monday suspended a volunteer effort in the now four-day search for two missing Iowa girls last seen riding their bikes near a lake in Evansdale. More than a thousand people showed up during the weekend to search for cousins Elizabeth Collins, 8, and Lyric Cook-Morrisseey, 10, who were last seen by their grandmother on Friday as they headed out to ride their bicycles, CNN reported. "As we evaluate the accomplishments and results of the searches conducted this past weekend, we are not asking for any additional assistance from the general public," Evansdale Police Chief Kent Smock said in an e-mail early Monday, adding the volunteer effort is was being suspended for now. Authorities said Sunday night there were no indications cousins the cousins were the victims of foul play though the possibility had not been ruled out, The Des Moines Register reported. "We've covered everything we can cover with civilian people," said Marcus Norman, the Evansdale Fire Department's volunteer coordinator. "Law enforcement is still working on the residential areas and things of that sort." A $15,000 reward is being offered in the disappearance of the girls. Their bikes were found about 4 p.m. Friday at nearby Meyers Lake. Elizabeth's purse and cellphone were found about 20 feet away. Dragging the lake and an extensive search of the entire city and surrounding vicinity by the army of volunteers turned up no further sign of the girls, the newspaper said. The girls' families said they haven't given up hope. "Sometimes when you think about it, you wonder if they're dead somewhere, but you try to push those thoughts out of your mind," said Misty Cook-Morrissey, Lyric's mother. "It's been good talking to people. ... It keeps your mind off of what's happening." Elizabeth Collins' mother, Heather Collins, said it would be unusual for her daughter to stray very far from home on her own. "We've talked about that before," Collins said "We've told them they're too young to go far." tinyurl.com/88bj5sz

Missing girls story gaining national supportThe reach of this search for two girls in Evansdale has gone far beyond the Cedar Valley. It has gone from Facebook and Twitter, to missing person posters, to the national media. The story of these two missing girls from Evansdale has gone nationwide, and reportedly even overseas. Tuesday authorities had no new information in their search for Elizabeth Collins, and Lyric Cook. The last time anyone say them was Friday afternoon. Authorities say their investigation has come to a stall, as Meyers Lake continues to drain. There are pink ribbons wrapped around trees, missing posters in local businesses, and a passionate group of journalists eager to tell this story. Tuesday afternoon Lyric Cooks parents spoke of the hard times they are facing without their daughter. "It's hard actually at night time it is the hardest. It starts to get dark and people start going home and there seems to be a lot more time to just be on your own and think and that's probably the hardest time. So sometimes we come down here and walk around by ourselves, sit on the porch. So yeah, it's hard," said Misty Cook-Morrissey. The support for these two girls grows everyday. Creative Impact Company in Evansdale has been making buttons with the Lyric's and Elizabeth's pictures. They are giving them away with a free-will donation, which will go to the families. Owners Steve and Linda Wachal say it's the least they could do. "Our community is such a great community and everybody has gotten on the bandwagon so to speak, putting it out on Facebook, we've go the national news coverage coming in... It's just wonderful to see the outpouring of support," said Linda Wachal. Wachal say it's all an effort to make the biggest impact. "Bring them home. Just bring them home safe," said Wachal. And this out pouring of support is not lost on this family. "People that have joined such as friends, family, people we don't know, the entire community, the surrounding areas it's just wonderful, ya know. People do want to help and they do care. We're extremely grateful and if it was somebody else's child we'd be there for them as well," said Cook-Morrissey. Just a little earlier Tuesday night more pink ribbons appeared in Waterloo as students and parents tied ribbons at Kingsley Elementary. Lyric's parents say she would be amazed by the outpouring of support and they hope she will get to see it soon. www.kwwl.com/story/19048396/missing-girls-story-gaining-national-support

Jim Spellman CNN Registered User Join Date: Jan 2012 Posts: 96 What computers were taken from the home? Misty tells me they are old computers they haven’t used in a while. No warrants… investigators asker her and she says yes. Also their cells phones were taken for a while and the info downloaded. Misty says the phones haven’t worked properly since then
What is your take on what happened to the girls?
I really don’t know. The geography of the area where the bikes were found would be difficult for a stranger abduction…no way to get out of there with 2 uncooperative girls would be easy.
None of the investigators I have spoken to think they will find anything in the lake…but of course we know until it’s drained. FBI dive team is en route to check the deeper parts.
What lead to LE wanting to search the attic?
I think it is just standard search. They asked the Grandmother Wylma for the key while I was with her.
Any neighbors go on vacation that day???
No idea…sorry Does the general public think the girls are in the lake? Some do, most I have chatted with…very unscientific…don’t think that there are in the lake. Remember that they searched the lake repeatedly from boats and they didn’t find anything…not even a flip flop or anything….so, its not like the lake hasn’t been looked at
Is the weather still hot & muggy?
Yes…storms possible this afternoon…very hot , very muggy.
Do you have a link to the Daniel interview? I spoke to him on the phone. We’ll likely have more to report soon on HLN and CNN from me or my colleague here Marty Savage.
Thanks Mr. Spellman
You are welcome!! I’m going to dinner but I’ll check back in after…ill answer Qs on twitter too while im on the go @jimspellmancnn

Not sure if you saw update on Lyric and Elizabeth on JVM.
Lyric's mom and dad are separated. The dad has had multiple drug charges, the last in December '11, meth manufacture and distribution, as well as use. He was involved in helping set up three meth labs. If I heard correctly, the Grandmother has or had temporary custody of Lyric.
The skeletons are rattling their way out of the closet!
