SPD searching for police impersonator
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Detectives are working to identify and apprehend a suspect who allegedly pulled a woman over earlier this week while passing himself off as a police officer.
The following is information released by the Shreveport Police Department:
At approximately 8:45 a.m. on June 13, 2012, an adult female victim was driving on Gilbert Avenue between Pierremont Road and Ockley Drive when a male suspect driving a white, newer model Chevrolet Impala with dark tinted windows and a flashing blue light in the front window stopped her. The suspect, described as a white male approximately six feet tall, about 180 pounds with salt and pepper hair, got out of the Impala and approached her vehicle demanding to see her driver's license. The man, who was wearing what appeared to be some type of navy blue or dark colored uniform with no patches, markings or badges visible, asked her to step out of the vehicle, claiming he thought she had been drinking. The victim refused and asked the man for his credentials. At that point, he returned to his vehicle and fled the scene of the crime. The victim was not injured.
The Shreveport Police Department would like to take this opportunity to make the public aware that, according to department policies, officers operating unmarked vehicles may make traffic stops but ONLY if they are wearing attire clearly identifying themselves as Shreveport Police officers. If an unmarked vehicle with flashing lights attempts to stop you and you are unsure if it is a legitimate police officer, begin driving to a busy, public place and immediately call 911. Shreveport Police officers are required by policy to notify dispatchers of their location when making a traffic stop and if it is indeed an officer stopping you, the police communications officer can give you that information. If it is not, the dispatcher will stay on the line with you while patrolmen respond to your location.
Investigators are asking for anyone with any information regarding this case to call them at 318-673-6955 or Shreveport-Caddo Parish Crime Stoppers at 318-673-7373. If you think you might have been victimized by this suspect but did not report it, please let us know so that we can put this man behind bars where he belongs.
