The AK-47, used in the attack at Episcopal High School, is a fairly common weapon, said Scott Shine, a state-certified gun range safety officer and hunter safety instructor who teaches classes in Jacksonville and St. Augustine. “You can buy the civilian version, the semi-automatic version, at a gun shop,” Shine said. “It’s actually quite common. I believe it’s the most common military rifle in the world.” Larry Holt, owner of Jax Tactical gun shop in Jacksonville Beach, said the weapon sells for about $400 to $500. According to the website AK-47.us, the semi-automatic version of the rifle typically fires a 7.62mm round. The AK-47 chamber is typically fed with ammunition through a 30-round curved box clip that attaches to the bottom of the rifle. “That’s essentially a box of shells attached to a rifle,” Shine said. The AK-47 semi-automatic will fire as fast as the trigger can be pulled. An automatic AK-47 fires repeatedly as long as the trigger is engaged. Shine said the AK-47 possesses no unique or special qualities over most military rifles. “The thing about this rifle, it’s not a lot different than any other rifle. It shoots a lethal projectile and the results would likely be the same with a hunting rifle that you could buy in a sporting goods store. The only difference is that it has a high-capacity clip,” Shine said.
