Former Columbia University sophomore Patricia Kubala, missing for 11 days, has been found alive and well.
But her reappearance -- a tremendous relief for all who know her -- did not answer as many questions as it created.
Kubala was found last night on a stretch of highway in Nevada, apparently trying to hitchhike her way to Washington State.
In a press release issued today, Columbia officials stated that "the New York City Police Department has confirmed that Patricia Kubala is no longer a missing person. We are extremely pleased that Patricia has been found."
Kubala's reason for her abrupt withdrawal and disappearance from Columbia remains a mystery, however. A friend said last night that Kubala has been in telephone contact with her parents but has no interest in returning to either Columbia or her home in Arlington, Texas.
As far as anyone knows, "She's continuing on her odyssey across the country, and that's all we know," Columbia Spectator Managing Editor Henry Tam said.
Kubala's parents have wired her money for her journey, Tam added.
Where exactly Kubala wishes to go or what she intends to do remain unknown. Having withdrawn from Columbia, she would have to reapply if she desired to return to the university.
Kubala withdrew from Columbia on the 14th, and was last seen there on the 17th. Her disappearance led to a frantic search of the campus, as well as missing-persons reports in both New York and Texas. She told no one of her plans and left with nothing but her knapsack and the clothes on her back.
Although foul play was never seriously considered, many who knew her, including her parents, feared she had committed suicide or been murdered sometime after her disappearance.
