A Bellingham woman who had been lost in the Marblemount wilderness for at least 48 hours was hospitalized in stable condition Sunday after searchers found her Saturday evening. Searchers located 33-year-old Carinna Kuhns-Duffield — who was hypothermic but conscious — three to four miles from where National Forest park rangers found her black 2007 Toyota Camry on Friday, 17 miles off Highway 20 on Cascade Road in central Skagit County. The vehicle apparently veered off the road and was stuck on some rocks. Kuhns-Duffield, who was reportedly disoriented because of a medical condition, was nude when rescuers found her near the Cascade River about 6 p.m. She also suffered bruises on her legs and feet. Bellingham Police Sgt. Mike Johnston said it was unclear why Kuhns-Duffield was without clothes. Police reported that her family said she was suffering from an infection they believed was causing her strange behavior. Johnston said searchers had to persuade Kuhns-Duffield that they were there to help. They provided her with clothing, and she was flown by helicopter to Skagit Valley Hospital, where she remained Sunday night. More than 60 people from Whatcom, Skagit, King and Snohomish counties had been searching for the woman since her car was found Friday. Kuhns-Duffield was reported missing Wednesday after she did not show up at her sister’s house in Stanwood as expected. Kuhns-Duffield’s husband, Gerald Kuhns, said his wife had a fever and “wasn’t thinking clearly” when she left. www.bellinghamherald.com/102/story/148123.html
