SKAGIT COUNTY -- The car that belongs to the Bellingham woman who has not been since Wednesday afternoon has been found, Bellingham police said on Saturday.
Police said park rangers spotted Carrina Kuhns-Duffield's Toyota Camry on Cascade Road 17 miles off of Highway 20 on Friday. A tip led authorities to the car.
Kuhns-Duffield apparently drove off the road and got her vehicle stuck in some rocks.
"There were some scuff marks to indicate the car may have lost control, done a 180-degree slide into an embankment and ended up on three wheels," said Glen Hutchings with Bellingham police.
The car was not in drivable condition, but police said judging from the damage on the vehicle, Kuhns-Duffield is not likely to have gotten injured.
Police said they were surprised to find Kuhns-Duffield's car in the north Cascades, as she was supposed to be on her way to Camano Island when she disappeared.
"This is an area that is absolutely foreign to her," Hutchings said. "This is not some destination she's sought out before, or hiked in these areas."
Police believe she may have gotten out of her car to look for help. Kuhns-Duffield did leave behind her food and drink in the car, and family members said she may be in a very confused state.
"The family has reported to us at times in the very recent past, just over the last few days that she had experienced times where she didn't even know her husband's name, or some of her family members around, which is concerning to us," Hutchings said.
A passerby may have spotted Kuhns walking on the side of the road and picked her up, police said, but she may be too confused or may even be suffering from a medical condition.
Search and rescue teams from Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties are scouring the surrounding area for the 33-year-old missing woman.
Kuhns-Duffield is said to be 150 pounds at 5 feet 6 inches tall with curly brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a light-blue V-neck shirt and jeans with pink flip-flop sandals.
Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call Bellingham police at 360-676-6911.
