Forensic anthropologist Mary Manhein joined Caddo sheriff's investigators Tuesday afternoon to help search for the remains of Kristi O'Pry. Manhein, director of LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services Lab in Baton Rouge, and Maria Allaire, FACES lab researcher and 19-year investigator, were in Mansfield on Tuesday morning leading a seminar for area law enforcement officers on various aspects of forensic anthropology, including how to distinguish between human and animal bones. Since she was in the area, Manhein agreed to meet with Caddo sheriff's authorities at the site on Jefferson-Paige Road near the American Rose Center where a search had been under way for more than a week for O'Pry's remains. Investigators were led there by Shreveporter Eric Mickelson, who confessed to killing O'Pry and dumping her body in the Greenwood area more than 10 years ago. He was the last person seen with O'Pry in June 1996. Manhein, who has investigated hundreds of forensic cases across the country, was contacted by Caddo a week ago, and she has been offering help over the telephone. "They wanted our advice on what might have happened to the body and recovery efforts." Caddo Correctional Center inmates were used last week to clear underbrush to aid in the search. Manhein said she is interested in looking at the terrain. "We'll try to give input we can on possible water or animal transport. "ยป We hope to give them an opinion on where to look," Manhein said. www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070725/NEWS01/707250327/1002/NEWS
