On Monday, Michael White was charged with second-degree murder a day after the body of his pregnant wife Liana was found in a ditch close to the couple's home.
July 12: Liana White disappears. Around 7:30 a.m. a passerby finds Ms. White's tan 1991 Ford Explorer abandoned less than two kilometres from the couple's home and calls police. The truck was found in a gravel parking lot near a recreational centre. The driver's door was wide open, and the keys were on the floor of the vehicle. Personal possessions belonging to Ms. White, including a cellphone, a pair of shoes, credit cards and other identification, were later recovered close to the SUV. Police say they found no obvious signs of foul play at the scene and launched a search for the missing woman. Her husband, Michael White, tells police that the last time he saw his wife was when she left for work around 6:15, although witnesses say they saw the truck parked in the lot before then.
July 13: In an appearance before the media, Michael White make a tearful plea for his wife's safe return as the search continues.
July 15: Area of search widened beyond park where her vehicle was found as Mr. White starts his own search with the help of family and friends.
July 16: Investigators conduct a search of the Whites' house.
July 17: Around 5 p.m., a search team led by Mr. White discovers a body on the side of a rural road less than 10 minutes drive from the couple's northwest Edmonton bungalow. The searchers call 911 immediately. Later that night, police take Mr. White in for questioning and his truck is seized.
July 18: Mr. White is charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a dead body.
July 19: Mr. White makes a brief court appearance but does not enter a plea. Police say that Liana White's body is too decomposed to determine the cause of death, but that there are signs of a struggle.
