Steven Lee DeBrish often spoke of disappearing into ocean waves and never coming back. He had visions of chasing a white bull out in the water that would carry him away. DeBrish may have been chasing that vision when he went missing three months ago. A week after a jogger discovered the badly decomposed body inside a cave along Pescadero State Beach on July 10, the San Mateo County Coroner's office matched a thumbprint to that of DeBrish, 44.
Police have yet to determine a cause of death. A spokesman for the County Sheriff's Office said detectives were investigating it as a suspicious death pending a toxicology report, but there were no obvious signs of foul play.
Eleanor Hofmann, DeBrish's partner, said he had been missing since mid-April. A paranoid schizophrenic, DeBrish shuttled between the San Bruno apartment he shared with Hofmann and her daughter and his mother's house in San Mateo. He had not taken his medications for a year and was becoming increasingly short-tempered and paranoid, imagining that he heard threatening voices.
Raised in Half Moon Bay and Pescadero, DeBrish knew the beaches well. The cave he died in was often used by transients. The tide would go out every four to six weeks, making it a perfect hiding place.
"He loved being among the homeless, but he wasn't a transient. He had a home, a mother, a brother," said Hofmann.
DeBrish would disappear after an argument, sometimes to Arizona or Utah, and stay there for weeks. He always made sure someone knew where to find him, or else his family would discover he had been arrested for drinking in public.
"I never would have guessed he was so close by," said Hofmann.
A roofer by trade, DeBrish worked odd jobs at the Arrowhead bottling factory in San Bruno and a traveling circus to help support himself, Hofmann and her daughter, Kimberly.
His two children, Kimberlee and Jeffrey, live in Pleasant Hill with his ex-wife. He is also survived by his father and a brother, Craig.
When he wasn't struggling, DeBrish was "happy-go-lucky," according to Hofmann. He dreamt of becoming an architect, and drew designs of the home he'd like to build for her. He said he wanted another daughter. He came up with get-rich-quick real estate schemes.
DeBrish quit his last job before Christmas following an argument with a co-worker, and things fell apart after that, said Hofmann. When he disappeared on April 17, his family imagined he was off in Tucson, Ariz., or had even checked himself into a counseling program. They did not file a missing-persons.

[glow=red,2,300]Update On Missing Part-Time Model [/glow] WINNETKA — Authorities set out to determine today if the body of a woman found in a pickup truck belonging to a man previously identified as a "person of interest" is that of a missing 21-year-old Ukrainian immigrant.
Detectives discovered the decomposing body about 3 p.m. yesterday in the covered and locked bed of a pickup truck parked at a storage facility at Sherman Way and Winnetka Avenue, said Los Angeles police Officer Sara Faden.
They were investigating the disappearance of Iryna Singerman, who moved to Los Angeles one year ago and was last seen July 25 by her husband at her West Los Angeles home.
The 2002 Ford pickup truck owned by Brian Joseph Cullen, previously identified as a "person of interest" in the case, was parked at the facility, and a "strong odor was emanating from the truck bed," Faden said.
As of early this morning, the body was still listed as a Jane Doe, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.
After Singerman was reported missing on July 26, her 2005 Mercedes-Benz was found parked in the driveway of a home in the 5000 block of Medina Road in Woodland Hills, which is rented by 57-year-old Cullen, said LAPD Detective Jennifer Hickman.
Cullen, who also goes by the name Mark Corbett and has described himself as a financial adviser, has a criminal record, Hickman said last week.
Singerman, who did occasional modeling work, "apparently had a romantic and business relationship with Cullen," Hickman said.
On July 26, a witness reported seeing a man driving a gray 2005 Ford Focus with Vista Ford paper plates to a parking lot at 6030 Canoga Ave. in Woodland Hills, according to police.
The man took two trash bags from the car and threw them into a trash bin before driving away from the parking lot. The witness thought the man was acting suspiciously so he checked the bags, discovering blood-soaked items, police said, adding a baseball bat and Singerman's documents were inside the bags.
Police found other "bloody" items belonging to Singerman at Cullen's rented home, detectives said.
Authorities today were still searching for Cullen, who was believed to have fled the area around the time of Singerman's disappearance, Faden said.
Cullen is 5 feet 11 inches tall and 185 pounds. He may be driving a 2005 gray Ford Focus hatchback with the California license plate 5PBS947.
Anyone with additional information was asked to call (818) 374-7721 or (877) LAWFULL.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office confirmed Monday that the body found in Galt on Saturday was that of 15-year-old Aaron Brooks, Galt police Lt. Ken Erickson said. However, even before it was made official, Brooks' family and friends have been resigned to the fact that the teen was the one who was found dead in a creek off an asphalt trail that leads to the park located east of Highway 99 and south of Walnut Avenue. Volunteers searching for Brooks found what they believe was his body at about 9 a.m. Saturday in the unnamed creek. Reached by phone Monday afternoon, a Brooks family member who declined to state her name said she is anxious to learn when Brooks died and how it happened. Officials said an autopsy to determine the cause of death was not definitive late Monday afternoon. A toxicology report is pending. The family last saw Brooks the afternoon of Oct. 26, but Galt police reported that Brooks was seen the following afternoon in the east parking lot of Galt Supermarket on A Street. Meanwhile, Wilton resident Salvatore Carmelo Maggio, who Galt police arrested Saturday night on suspicion of murder, is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. today at Sacramento County Superior Court. Maggio, 19, is in county jail on no bail, according to the county District Attorney's Office. Charges were not filed as of Monday, but they are expected to be filed by the time of Maggio's arraignment, according to DA spokeswoman Lana Wyant. She isn't aware if Maggio has retained a private attorney. If he requests a public defender, one will likely be appointed during today's arraignment, according to Wyant. Until about two weeks ago, Maggio worked at Pizza Works on West Turner Road in Lodi, said Lisa Morgan, the restaurant's assistant manager. The former employee even went by "TC," the nickname police publicized when they were seeking to speak to him last week. Maggio baked pizzas and prepared the buffet for almost a year, Morgan said. "He just quit showing up for work, so we let him go," she said. "He picked up his last check the 25th of October, the day before the kid was missing." Maggio was treated by Galt Fire Department paramedics Oct. 26 after telling police he was attacked by three male juveniles at Emerald Vista Park, Erickson said. Wyant said she isn't aware of any criminal history by Maggio in Sacramento County. [glow=red,2,300]"The local police have him still listed as a runaway," Brooks' sister, Sarah, wrote on a special Web site for Brooks on Nov. 1. "This has been preventing other organizations from being able to get involved. A week later, and an Amber Alert has still not yet been put out." Although police considered Brooks a voluntary runaway, Erickson said Monday that Brooks was placed in a national missing persons database Oct. 27, the day that Brooks was reported missing.[/glow] www.lodinews.com/articles/2005/11/08/news/1_brooks_051108.txt

Body Identified As Missing Woman A body found dumped near a lake in Golden Gate Park was positively identified Thursday as a 27-year-old South San Francisco woman missing more than a week, authorities said.
Sophia Sciutto-Creps disappeared March 27 along with her friend, 21-year-old Kimberly Millen of San Bruno.
The body, wrapped in plastic, was found by a gardener Wednesday near Stow Lake, San Francisco Police spokeswoman Maria Oropeza said. She would not release a cause of death.
Millen's body, also wrapped in plastic, was discovered Saturday near a park in Richmond. She had been stabbed more than three dozen times and severely beaten. Police said lack of blood at the scene indicated Millen was killed somewhere else.
"There are some similarities between this case and the Richmond case," Oropeza said, refusing to elaborate.
Sciutto-Creps' missing car was found Thursday morning on a San Francisco street.
SF police spokeswoman Maria Oropeza said the vehicle had been discovered around 9 a.m. on 26th Street.
"Certainly this is something that the inspectors involved were looking for," she told KTVU. "We're hoping it will povide with more information about what occurred,"
The discovery of the car came less than 24 hours after a bloody body was found dumped on the side of a road in Golden Gate Park. Police believe it might be a missing South San Francisco woman whose friend was found stabbed to death last week in Richmond.

The body of a woman carried as an unknown Jane Doe for a decade has been identified by the coroner's office.
The body of Holly Krewson, 23, was found near Descanso in 1996 and wasn't identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office until last month when La Mesa police linked Krewson to the Jane Doe.
The Sheriff's Department investigated the discovery of the skeletal remains, found off state Route 79.
Dental records confirmed the identity. Although the cause of Krewson's death isn't known, it is now considered an active homicide investigation. The unidentified remains were buried at county expense in 1996.
"They found Holly," the woman's uncle Bruce Fenton said. "I can't say it's a shock. We pretty much thought she was dead all these years."
But Fenton said he was frustrated that his niece's body was listed as a Jane Doe by the coroner's office all the years her family was looking for her.
Krewson, the daughter of a La Mesa print-shop owner, was reported missing by her family in 1995. For years, the family distributed tens of thousands of fliers on her birthday, consulted psychics and made personal appeals on television.
"We want to know what happened and how she died," Fenton said.
Other members of the Krewson family refused to comment at the request of La Mesa police.
Sheriff's homicide Lt. Dennis Burgos would only confirm the Krewson case was transferred to La Mesa police investigators. Police said the investigation is ongoing and that any information made public now could jeopardize the probe.

[glow=red,2,300]Missing Sacramento Woman Back Home After Months[/glow] A Sacramento woman who had been missing since last October is back home with her family. 31-year-old Geneva Brewer was apparently visiting family in Arizona. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's department she returned home in early March. Brewer's family reported her missing in October. She was last seen when she dropped off her foster children at school and had plans of driving to the bank to cash $4,000 dollars in checks. At the time, Geneva cared for three foster children, two of which she was in the process of adopting. Brewer's family had been critical of law enforcement, saying they did not think officers were doing enough to search for the missing woman. “This is not like her. She wouldn't just leave me like this. And like leave the kids?" Geveva's sister Marvale Young told CBS 13 last November. The Sacramento Sheriff's department responded by saying even though Geneva's disappearance was out of character, there was nothing to indicate anything suspicious. cbs13.com/topstories/local_story_111113601.html
