Bones Found by Dog ID’d as Woman Missing Since 1999Chicago - Human remains found by a man walking his dog in Hammond, Ind. in October have been identified as that of a woman missing since 1999, according to the captain of the Hammond Police Department. Francine Carlson, who was 38 when she was reported missing 13 years ago, was identified using DNA retrieved from her son. The bones were discovered last fall by Michael Bender , who was walking his dog near a construction area. Bender said his dog dug up a finger bone with a small gold ring on it, which had a cross and blue stone. At the time, Bender said the skull was small and appeared to have long brown hair. The area had been under construction after a building at the location was recently demolished. Authorities called in a forensic anthropologist from the University of Indianapolis, who helped narrow down the possibilities so police could request DNA from possible family members. DNA taken from the bones matched that from Carlson’s relative. Carlson’s cause of death remained undetermined and police had not charged anyone in connection with her disappearance. Carlson was reported missing to Whiting police in June, 1999. www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/metro/francine-carlson-remains-identified-skeleton-found-hammond-ring-dog-20120119
